Looking for a café at Boon Keng?

While Boon Keng is never quite in the cafe radar, there are SlickShocks, Platform 1094, and Ong Lai Gelato which is the latest to join the hood.

Nestled in a HDB estate at 3 St George’s Road, about a 5 minutes’ walk from Boon Keng MRT, Ong Lai Gelato is a small (limited seating), cosy gelato cafe that you can drop by to get your sweet craving fix.

Decorated in youthful colours of pink and yellow, the owners constantly conduct R&D to introduce new delightful flavours, some of them are local flavours inspired by their nostalgic memories.

Ice Cream flavours include their name-sake Pineapple Tart, Kaya Toast, Gianduia Nutella, Salted Caramel with Almond, Milo Dinosaur, White Rabbit, Smoked Milk, Uji Matcha, Strawberry Milk, Apple Pie, and Orh Nee.

Prices are considered inexpensive comparatively, at $3.50 for a single scoop, $7 for a double, and a dollar extra per scoop for premium flavours.

At a shop called “Ong Lai Gelato”, there is no way I won’t order the Pineapple Tart flavour which is supposedly made with real pineapple jam bits.

Am glad they got this smooth, rich-tasting and not too sweet, with varied textures such as buttery crumbs in the middle to let you reminisce about having pineapple tarts.

I also had the Orh Nee inspired by the Teochew-style yam dessert paste, though I thought real yam bits could be included into the mix for it to taste more yammy (closer to the actual dessert) with contrasting textures.

The waffles was a safe choice – crispy, butter and soft on the inside with a tinge of buttery saltiness.

What is uniquely available at Ong Lai Gelato is the praffle, which is a waffle-shaped prata.

Quite a good find at the neighbourhood block at Boon Keng. I do think the team can afford to introduce more local-meets-retro flavours that other ice cream cafes may not have (to better differentiate), and perhaps a pineapple soda drink of sorts which would be a refreshing accompaniment.
