I had seen The Neighbourwok mentioned quite a few times for its Hokkien Mee, but Bukit Batok is not exactly somewhere I find myself heading to regularly.

There are also two other outlets at Owen Road and The Clementi Mall (Hawker Street), which may be more convenient for you.

If you prefer a wider local menu, there is also Wok & Toast 街坊 at Serangoon Central, a newer concept by the same team serving its Hokkien Mee alongside Kaya Butter Toast, Dry Chilli Ban Mian, Nasi Lemak and kopi.

The Neighbourwok actually started during the pandemic period, when founder Kelvin Teo was still working full-time as an operations manager in the oil and gas industry.

His father had previously run a satay stall in Jurong West, which also explains the slightly unusual pairing of Hokkien Mee and satay on the menu.

Even the name is a play on its Bukit Batok neighbourhood roots and the wok.

The current menu at Owen Road centres on Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee ($6, $8, $10), with the $10 serving coming with bigger prawns.

There are also Chicken and Pork Satay ($0.80 each), Mutton Satay ($0.90), Ketupat ($1), and Grilled Skewer Prawns ($4.50 per set).

I went for the $10 Hokkien Mee, and if you like the wetter style, this one definitely comes with plenty of zhup.

The yellow noodles and bee hoon were thoroughly soaked in a savoury prawn and pork bone stock, with egg worked through the noodles and prawns, squid, pork belly and crispy lard scattered around the plate.

The broth was one of the stronger parts for me, as there was enough seafood sweetness to give the noodles flavour.

The noodles did become softer as they sat in the stock, so those who like a firmer, drier fry may feel differently.

My favourite part was actually the prawns, which were fresh and had a firm bite (glad I ordered the $10 portion with the large prawns).

My main nitpick was that I wished the sambal had been placed more to one side, as it was quite spicy (and watery) and overwhelmed many parts of the plate.

If you enjoy the zhup zhup type of Hokkien Mee with crispy lard, this is probably closer to your style.
