I recently made a trip to Tanjong Pagar Food Centre with the intention of revisiting Braissers Rice Bowl.
To my surprise, the stall had already disappeared from the food centre’s corner.
In its place stands a new Hokkien Mee stall called Prawn Hub, which carries a cheeky name that is hard to ignore.
It seems like the owner is the same person behind the previous rice bowl concept. But why? Since the Japanese-style rice bowls seem to be doing relatively well.
The plus point: the stall begins serving as early as 7am (according to Google).
The menu is kept simple with plates priced at $5, $6, and $8.
Each order was fried to order, and auntie used a wooden cover over the noodles and broth, a technique to ensure the flavours were properly locked in. So do be prepared to wait a while.
When the plate first arrived, the texture sat in a comfortable middle ground where it was neither too dry nor overly soupy.
If you take a bite immediately, the flavour might come across as somewhat mild or even bland to those who prefer a heavy prawn punch.
This version was noticeably less oily than what you might find elsewhere, perhaps to suit the CBD crowd.
Also, the ingredients were fresh, and the portion of prawns and squid was generous for the price. The pork lard was slightly lao hong and could do better with more crispness.
The sambal chilli was a vital component of the experience as it was quite tasty and offered a significant spicy kick.
Prawn Hub can scratch that itch if you have Hokkien Mee cravings in Tanjong Pagar, though I personally found the previous rice bowl concept had a better edge for this area.
