Clap Cafe is one of those places I probably would not have noticed in Bugis.
It is found within Coliwoo Midtown, which gives the café a slightly unusual setting.
Not quite a full destination café, not quite a hotel lobby café either, but somewhere in between.
If you are wondering about the name… As the saying goes, “It takes two hands to clap”, the café was started by two friends who shared a passion for coffee and baking.
The new space looks more functional, with a collection counter, drinks fridge and a small cake display.
Around Bugis and Bras Basah, where many cafés either get crowded or feel too cramped, this one gives you space to sit, have a drink, reply a few messages, or escape the heat without feeling rushed.
Food-wise, it is kept fairly simple, with a Chicken Ham & Cheese Sandwich ($5.90) and cakes said to be freshly baked by the owner.
The cake display had choices such as Basque Cheesecake ($8.20), Maple Pecan ($9.20), Espresso Tiramisu ($12), English Lemon Gateau ($8.20), Matcha Redbean ($8.20), Red Velvet ($8.20), Blackout Chocolate ($8.20), Molten Chocolate ($12), and Sticky Date Cake ($12).
The Maple Pecan ($9.20) had that nutty, brown-sugar sort of sweetness from the pecans, with a texture that felt more home-baked than polished patisserie.
Perhaps because I took the last slice from the display, the Matcha Redbean ($8.20) did not quite work for me.
The sponge leaned strangely wet rather than moist, though it could have been a storage issue or an off batch.
If you are there for drinks, there are the usual suspects, along with more dressed-up options such as Dirty Moscow ($10), Tiramisu Latte ($10), Sea Salt Latte ($8.70), Cinnamon Latte ($8.20), and Osmanthus Latte ($8.20).
For now, it works best if you need somewhere along Middle Road for a convenient coffee-and-laptop stop.
