ABC Brickworks Food Centre has quite a few stalls with straightforward names, but Qian Duo Duo ShangHai Prawn Noodles Xiaolongbao 钱多多上海虾面小笼包 at #01-29 is not one of them.
First, 钱多多 already sounds like a form of manifestation. More money, more money. Maybe the hawker really said it into existence.
Then there is the other question: what exactly is Shanghai Prawn Noodles?
I have not really heard of Shanghai prawn noodles as a common dish, at least not in the same way people talk about Xiao Long Bao, scallion oil noodles or Shanghai fried pork chop noodles.
Over here, you can order Prawn Noodles ($4.50), Prawn Pork Ribs Noodles ($4.80), Prawn Dumplings Noodles ($4.80), Pork Ribs Noodles ($4), Pork Dumplings Noodles ($3.80), and Wanton Noodles ($3.50).
Their 古早味 Prawn Pork Ribs Noodles came with pork ribs, meatballs, fishcake, chopped spring onions, and fried shallots. I must say, not bad for its price.
To be honest, the bowl tasted like a cross between Shanghainese la mian and local-style prawn noodles.
The soup had a mild crustacean flavour, with a gentle prawn shell sweetness rather than the deeper, more robust stock you may expect from old-school prawn mee stalls.
The pork ribs were soft enough, though not the fall-apart tender kind, while the fish cake added that familiar local touch. Actually, not bad.
There is also the more Shanghainese side of things with Pork Xiaolongbao ($5 for 6 pieces), Pork Fried Dumplings ($7 for 10 pieces), Pork Dumplings ($6 for 10 pieces), and Red Oil Wanton ($6 for 12 pieces).
The Xiao Long Bao came in a bamboo steamer, though they were not as fine as restaurant style ones, but the skin was soft enough, with warm pork filling and some soup inside.
For a hawker centre Xiao Long Bao, I thought it was fair for the price.
The Pork Fried Dumplings aka Guo Tie were more enjoyable for me.
The dumplings had a browned base with crisp lacy edges, while the top stayed soft and chewy and the fillings juicy enough.
Qian Duo Duo is a little odd in concept, but that may also be why it is memorable.
It is not every day you find prawn noodles, pork rib noodles, Xiao Long Bao and Guo Tie (and all pretty decent) under one hawker stall signboard.
