Yunma Bakehouse feels like one of those new bakeries I walked past and wondered, “Wait, was this here before?”
Located along Purvis Street (hidden behind construction scaffolding), the bakery café is currently only open for limited hours, so do time your visits.
The space is brighter and roomier inside than I expected, with soft beige tones, wood framed arches, rounded booth seats, and a display counter filled with breads, buns and cakes.
The bake display had quite a mix during my visit, with smaller buns such as Cranberry Cream Cheese Bun ($2.50), Double Chocolate Bun ($2.50), Taro Bun ($2.50), Curry Potato Bun ($3.50), Tomato Focaccia ($2.80), and Jalapeno Cheese Focaccia ($2.80).
Of course, I had to have a trending Shio Pan, and choices here include Shiopan ($3), Shiopan Matcha ($3.50), and Garlic Cheese Shiopan ($4).
The Garlic Cheese Shiopan ($4) had a light golden crust, with a fluffy and buttery middle.
The Potato Bacon Bun ($2.50) was another savoury bake I picked, with soft bread wrapped around creamy russet potato and bacon.
Nothing fanciful, but it had that slightly old-school bakery comfort.
For the sweet tooth, there were also cakes including Tiramisu ($8), Hazelnut Chocolate ($8.90), Raspberry Napoleon ($8.90), Oreo Cheesecake ($8.90), Matcha Burnt Cheesecake ($9.50), Soya Tofu Cake ($9.50), and Burnt Cheesecake ($8.90).
The Soya Tofu Cake ($9.50) was possibly the most interesting of the lot.
The plain-looking cake was lighter than the usual cheesecake, with a gentle tofu aroma and a clean finish. Good for those who prefer something smooth, delicate, and not too heavy.
For a quiet Purvis Street café near Bugis, the space is pleasant, the bakes are affordable, and the cakes are worth trying if you want something lighter than the usual.
