Small-batch bakeries in Singapore have increasingly moved away from the higher profile areas to settle in more obscure (some say ulu) areas of local housing estates.
One such spot is blob, located at the foot of a HDB block at 129 Kim Tian Road, a 10–15 minute walk from Tiong Bahru MRT station.
The bakery cafe is a tiny, unassuming unit with a clean, beige exterior and a minimalist logo that feels very much like a hidden neighbourhood gem.
BUT… it won’t remain a secret for long.
There is this community feel where the open glass storefront allows you to peek at the bakes of the day before you even step inside.
The menu is focused on some experimental savoury bakes and a selection of refined sweets.
You can find offerings like Truffle Mushroom Baguette ($7.80), Tobiko Baguette ($7.20), Wasabi Tobiko Baguette ($7.50), Tomato Basil Sausage Ciabatta ($7.50), and Crab Rangoon Salt Bread ($5.40).
A less common offering here is the range of pretzels, such as the Tako Floss Pretzel Ball ($5.80), Almond Coconut Pretzel ($4.80), Cinnamon Pretzel ($4.20), and Original Pretzel ($3.80).
I had the Crab Rangoon Salt Bread ($5.40) and found it to be a clever twist on the classic shio pan.
The bread itself had a lovely buttery fragrance and a slight salty crunch on the exterior, while the interior was soft and airy.
I enjoyed the creamy crab filling which had a savoury depth that was not too overwhelming, providing a tasty contrast to the dough.
For those with a sweet tooth, they serve Original Canelé ($3.80), Banana Loaf with Maple Pecan Cream Cheese ($5.80), and Earl Grey Loaf with Lemon Glaze ($5.50).
I also tried the Banana Loaf ($5.80), which was moist and dense with a natural sweetness, but the thin layer of cream cheese was what really elevated the treat (though I wished there was slightly more).
On the beverage side, they use Niko Neko tea powder for their Yuri Matcha ($6.00), Ajisai Matcha ($7.00), and Tsubaki Hojicha ($6.00), alongside brewed teas like Genmaicha ($5.00).
One thing to keep in mind is that the shop is quite small, and the concrete bench seating is more suited for a quick rest rather than a long catch-up.
The focus on small-batch production ensures that everything on the shelf is fresh, though it does mean that popular items can sell out quickly.
If you are planning a visit, it is best to arrive early to secure your favourite bakes before the mid-afternoon closure.
