ABC Brickworks Food Centre has no lack of noodle stalls such as Fatty Cheong 肥仔详 and
Wah Leng Wanton Noodle, but Swee Kee Wanton Noodles 瑞记云吞面 at #01-39 is one of those older names that has quietly kept its regulars over the years.
The stall front is easy to spot with its bright yellow signboard and long line.
Other than Wanton Noodles, Swee Kee also serves Laksa, Wanton Soup, Shredded Chicken Mushroom Noodle and Chicken Feet Noodle.
From the old newspaper clipping pasted at the stall, Swee Kee had kept its noodles at $2 for more than 10 years despite rising costs.
Well, prices have been raised to $4 a plate, but it is still pretty affordable.
The Wanton Noodles came in a red plate with thin noodles, char siew, vegetables, chilli, dark sauce, pickled green chilli on the side, and a separate bowl of soup with wantons.
The noodles had that familiar old-school texture, thin and slightly springy, with enough bite after being tossed in the dark sauce.
The black sauce leaned sweet and savoury, coating the strands quite well without turning the bowl too wet.
The char siew was the leaner type, sliced thin and more about nostalgia than smoky caramelisation.
While Swee Kee is probably not the sort of stall people would travel across Singapore for, it still has its place at ABC Brickworks for those who miss that Wanton Mee taste they grew up with.
