King Albert Park Mall (KAP Mall) is a place that has always felt a little in-between to me.
More like somewhere you go when you live nearby, study nearby, gym nearby, or happen to be along the Bukit Timah stretch and need food.
This time, I was there for OneSocial, though it is the kind of café people might walk past without thinking much.
The under-the-radar café itself looks simple from the outside, with a black frontage, some fairy lights along the walkway, and a menu filled with familiar local items.
Head upstairs, though, and it is nicer than the shopfront suggests, with artworks on the walls, warm lighting, dark wood furniture, and a window looking out to greenery.
You will find local favourites from their Social Classic Set with a regular hot coffee or tea, and choices such as Mee Rebus ($8.90), Mee Siam ($8.90), Roti Prata with Curry Chicken ($10.90), Laksa ($11.90) and Nasi Lemak ($11.90).
The Mee Siam came with thin bee hoon, hard-boiled egg, tau pok, lime and sambal on the side.
It had the familiar sweet-sour profile, quite approachable, though I wished it came with more tang, maybe just a bit more ‘attitude’.
Thankfully, I asked for more sambal, as mixing it in gave the bowl a much-needed lift.
There is also The Social Toast Set, which comes with two soft-boiled eggs and a regular hot coffee or tea.
Options include Kaya Toast with Butter ($6.20), Kaya Toast with Peanut ($6.20), Butter Sugar Toast ($6.20), French Toast with Kaya ($6.20) and Nutella Toast ($6.60).
The Kaya Toast was more straightforward, with lightly crisp toast, butter and kaya in between.
Nothing unusual here, but it had that familiar local breakfast comfort, especially when paired with kopi and eggs.
One small thing I noticed was the pricing of the set. Ordering the set with kopi o appeared to cost about 20 cents more than ordering the items à la carte.
Yes, it is only 20 cents, but the set somehow costing more did make me redo the ordering (to save that bit).
If you are around King Albert Park, and want a quieter place for Nanyang-style local delights, kaya toast or kopi, this is somewhere peaceful to sit for a while.
