Omakase-style sets from $19.90 in the middle of Raffles City?

Of course people are going to queue.

In Singapore, that kind of pricing usually makes diners ask two questions at once, “What’s the catch?” and “How long must I wait?”

Sushidan from Tokyo opened its first Singapore outlet at Raffles City, with a second outlet opening at Parkway Parade (on 5 September 2026), bringing a more casual version of the Edomae sushi experience.

It is associated with chef Hiroyuki Sato, who is behind Ginza’s Hakkoku, and was also formerly head chef of Sushi Tokami.

The pricing makes it clear this is not meant to be a hushed, serious omakase splurge.

It is more like an entry point for diners who want the counter experience without breaking the bank.

The counter seats still give you that interactive bit of chef watching, while there are also regular dining tables if you prefer something less direct.

The menu starts with à la carte sushi from $1.99 per piece, sashimi from $2.99 and handrolls from $3.99, while the omakase style sets begin from $19.90.

The Goshoku Set ($19.90) includes seasonal chawanmushi, chef’s appetiser, three ochoko dons, a sushi platter, negitoro handroll and miso soup, while the Goshoku Aburi Set ($19.90) offers a torched version.

I went for the fuller Nanairo Set ($29.90), mainly because the jump from $19.90 to $29.90 did not feel too painful, and I wanted a fuller sense of what Sushidan was about.

The meal started with chawanmushi, which was simple and smooth, and did its job as a warm opening before the sushi arrived.

Then came the small ochoko dons, served in little cup-sized (or bowl) portions. Not every cup left a strong impression, but I liked that the set was not just six pieces of sushi and “goodbye”.

The nigiri pieces were served one by one, which helped the meal feel closer to a proper counter experience rather than a ready-assembled sushi platter being placed in front of you.

The sushi rice had a noticeable vinegar note, more assertive than what some casual sushi diners may expect.

As expected at this price, the pieces were not all equally strong, and the speed of serving was considerably fast.

The sweet prawn had a soft, delicate sweetness, while the salmon was fine but did not leave a very deep impression.

The chutoro was naturally one of the more anticipated pieces, with an almost silky, melt-in-the-mouth richness.

I found myself enjoying the aburi style items more, partly because the light torching added fragrance and brought out more oiliness from certain cuts.

The negitoro handroll was the best part of the meal for me. The chopped tuna had a soft, fatty texture, while the nori gave it a crisp bite.

For $29.90, I thought the Nanairo Set was good value. You get chawanmushi, small dons, six pieces of nigiri, a handroll and soup, which is quite a lot for the price, especially in a town location.

Just do not go in expecting every piece to be perfect or great.

Would I queue for a very long time? Probably not.

Would I return during off peak hours for the Nanairo Set, or perhaps try the aburi version? Quite possibly.

I would suggest going during off-peak hours if possible, as the line can build quickly once the lunch or dinner crowd appears.
