Gold Garden Cafe 金園茶餐廳 is the quintessential Cheung Sha Wan cha chaan teng to visit if you are in this part of Hong Kong.

Cheung Sha Wan is a local neighbourhood in western Kowloon, just next to Sham Shui Po, known for old-school eateries and everyday local food spots.

Walking through the doors feels like being caught back in time. It is bustling, unpretentious, and filled with the intense aroma of pastries and freshly brewed milk tea.

While some cha chaan teng are known for being highly crowded, this offers a slightly more relaxed pace where I enjoyed watching the locals catch up over their afternoon tea.

The menu is a collection of honest Cantonese staples that are both affordable and consistent.

Popular options include the Signature Puff Pastry Egg Tart (HKD 10), Pineapple Bun (HKD 12), Pineapple Bun with Butter (HKD 16), and the classic Satay Beef Instant Noodles (HKD 42).

I highly recommend timing your visit (around 1:30pm?) specifically for their famous Egg Tarts (was lucky as I got really warm ones just fresh and piping hot from the kitchen).

Unlike the shortcrust versions found in modern bakeries, these feature a puff pastry crust that is technically demanding to produce.

The proprietor, Mr Wu, uses a traditional method involving 128 layers of dough and lard that is chilled overnight before baking.

This results in a shell that is exceptionally light and shatters into buttery flakes with every bite.

The base holds a smooth and egg-heavy custard that isn’t cloying.

Took a bite, and loved the contrast between the hot, flaky shell and the wobbly, warm centre.

For those looking for a full meal, they offer various rice and noodle sets such as the Ham and Egg Sandwich (HKD 24) and the Luncheon Meat with Instant Noodles (HKD 38).

The Satay Beef Instant Noodles (HKD 42) deserve a mention as a definitive local comfort bowl.

Unlike drier versions found elsewhere, this is actually a pretty soupy affair. The beef slices are impressively tender, having been marinated to a soft consistency that contrasts with the firm bite of the “Gong Zai Mein” (instant noodles).

The sauce coating around the beef is punchy, carrying a heavy peanut aroma that gradually mingles with the warm broth as you eat.

To accompany your meal, their Silk Stocking Milk Tea (HKD 20) and Iced Coffee (HKD 22) are local favourites, pulled multiple times through a fine cloth filter to achieve a velvety texture.

It has a concentrated tea aroma and a strong caffeine kick that provides that energy boost to get through the day. (I personally recommend avoiding coffee before or after having this.)

If you are planning a visit, keep in mind that the egg tarts are often sold out by late afternoon, so I suggest visiting before 3:00pm to ensure you get them fresh from the oven.
