The rice dish comes in the form of Cheesy Nanyang Curry Baked Rice, which is not your usual plain rice filler.
This was creamy, mildly spiced, and topped with a layer of melted cheese, making it feel closer to comfort food than standard buffet rice.
The curry was not too fiery, so it should be manageable for the family table. I can imagine this being popular with those who want something saucy, especially when scooped from the corner where the cheese has slightly browned.
There is also a Cheesy Mentaiko Baked Rice option for those who prefer a Japanese leaning flavour.
Signature Chicken Bolognese
For noodles, the set includes the comforting Signature Chicken Bolognese.
This is one of the more kid-friendly dishes in the spread, with spiral pasta tossed in a tomato based sauce and finished with melted cheese.
Probably the dish the younger ones will go for.
Truffle Seafood Capellini
The Truffle Seafood Capellini is served canapé style in individual cups, topped with prawns and roe.
This gives the spread a more modern start, instead of going straight into heavy trays of rice and meat.
The truffle aroma was present without being too aggressive, while the chilled capellini kept things light.
Smoked Salmon Japanese Wafu Salad
The Smoked Salmon Japanese Wafu Salad helps to freshen up the meal.
With greens, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and smoked salmon, this gives the table a lighter option among all the cheese, gravy and fried items.
Japanese Baby Potato Salad with Egg Mayo
The Japanese Baby Potato Salad with Egg Mayo was more enjoyable than it sounded on paper.
The baby potatoes were coated in a savoury sauce, with bonito flakes giving it that slightly smoky edge.
Torched Tamagoyaki with Goma Dressing
The Torched Tamagoyaki with Goma Dressing was softer and gentler in flavour.
The egg had that mild sweetness you would expect from tamagoyaki, while the goma dressing gave it a nutty creaminess.
On & On Butterflied Roasted Chicken
The main centrepiece is the On & On Butterflied Roasted Chicken, made with a 1.8kg whole organic chicken.
It comes with guacamole, Mexican charred corn, truffle mashed potatoes and signature chicken gravy.
Visually, this is the dish that makes the table look more celebratory. The chicken sits on a bed of sweet corn, with charred edges and a golden roasted finish.
The meat was still fairly juicy, while the skin had a light smokiness from the roasting. I also liked that the signature chicken gravy was served separately, so the chicken did not arrive drowning in sauce.
Cantonese Salad Prawn with Tri Colour Roe or Nanyang Nonya Prawns with Beancurd
For the prawn dish, you can choose between Cantonese Salad Prawn with Tri Colour Roe or Nanyang Nonya Prawns with Beancurd.
The version we had was a colourful take on the classic cold prawn salad, with crisp prawns coated in a creamy dressing and topped with roe for texture.
Special Premium Seafood Tofu Pot
The Special Premium Seafood Tofu Pot is probably the dish that speaks most to the older generation.
It comes with wa wa cai (mini Chinese cabbage), fortune bag, sea cucumber, tiger prawns, fish maw and Chinese mushrooms.
The gravy was thick and comforting, with a more homely Chinese-banquet style flavour.
Thai Style Platter
The Thai Style Platter includes Thai fish cake, pandan chicken, seafood rings and spring rolls.
This is the familiar fried platter, and every buffet needs one because someone at the table will always want the crispy things.
The pandan chicken was my favourite item for its fragrance, and yes, do not skip the sweet chilli dip.
Dessert
To end, the set includes Mini Chocolate Eclair and Profiteroles, along with Classic Brownie and Petite Cheesecake.
They are simple, bite sized sweets, which work better after a full meal than one heavy dessert.
The eclairs and profiteroles are easier to pick up and share, while the brownie and cheesecake give the dessert box a richer finish.
Overall, the On & On Diners Mother’s Day Specials set feels best suited for families who want to celebrate at home conveniently.
There is enough variety here for different generations, from baked rice and bolognese for the younger ones, to seafood tofu pot and roasted chicken for the main family table.
At $368 before GST for 12 to 15 pax, with free delivery and a complimentary Premium Mini Buffet for another 6 to 8 pax, it is really value for its money.
