Havelock Road Blk 50 Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee at ABC Brickworks Market and Food Centre has closed, and in its place now stands Ah Lai Hokkien Mee.
If you’ve eaten the old Blk 50 version before, you’ll know the uncle and auntie behind it were seasoned pros.
Their noodles had that unmistakable wok hei and a broth deep enough. So when Ah Lai moved in to take over their stall, expectations were sky-high.
They’re still getting their online listings sorted out.
Now, about the Hokkien Mee ($5, $6). Ah Lai’s Hokkien mee is not a carbon copy of the old Blk 50 style.
For a $5 plate, the ingredients are generous.
You get prawns, squid, pork slices, a scattering of chives, and bean sprouts that add crunch and freshness.
The noodles are yellow noodles and bee hoon, fried into a zhup zhup slurpy, saucy mix (that may remind some of a light carbonara).
I found it creamier and wetter than most versions, but that made it oddly comforting.
The pork lard bits brought bursts of flavour, though I wished they stayed crisp a little longer.
As for the chilli, it was mild and a bit sweet, but I thought it could do with slightly more kick, more edge.
There are so many new Hokkien Mee stalls around, and it’s really not easy.
Google reviews so far have not been too fantastic, so time will tell.
