[Fukuoka] When I started looking for the best coffee in Fukuoka, one name came up again and again.
Coffee County Fukuoka in Yakuin is often mentioned in a matter-of-fact way.
The business began as a roastery in Kurume City in November 2013.
Before opening, the founders spent nearly three months travelling through Central America, basing themselves in Nicaragua.
The coffees served today largely come from farms they have visited themselves.
With another outlet in Tokyo, this Fukuoka shop sits about five minutes from Yakuin Station, in a neighbourhood known for small independent businesses.
Compared with the Kurume site, this shop offers a wider range of beverages and house-made sweets, while keeping coffee at the centre.
The menu is short, and for the Hand Drip Coffee, you are asked to choose from beans available hot (¥600) or iced (¥700).
There are also the usual Americano served hot or iced (¥550), Latte hot or iced (¥650), and Cardamom Milk Coffee hot or iced (¥700).
Beyond coffee, there is a small cordial section offering Seasonal Cordial (¥600), and Elderflower Cordial served hot, iced, or with soda (¥550).
The light-roasted latte was smooth and lightly sweet, with acidity present but controlled, and bitterness staying low throughout.
I finished the cup easily, and thought to myself, “This is a really good cup of coffee”.
Sweets are limited but thoughtfully made, with Brazilian Pudding (¥450) offering a smooth custard texture, Carrot Cake (¥550) packed with nuts and spices and topped lightly with cream, and a dense Prune Chocolate Gâteau (¥600).
Walking out, I understood why Coffee County comes up so often in searches about good coffee in Fukuoka.
