If you have ever walked through Great World wishing for something a little more interesting than the usual brunch plates, well, French Fold has just opened there.
It is part of the Merci Marcel group, the same people behind the French inspired cafés in Tiong Bahru and Palais Renaissance.
You may just want to have an “Emily in Paris” moment with this all-day crêperie, where you can order a savoury galette at ten in the morning or a sweet crêpe just before closing time.
The space here is contemporary, with a faint scent of butter, cheese and maybe caramel.
The Great World outlet continues its focus on galettes made with buckwheat flour from Brittany.
Buckwheat galettes include French Butter ($9), Egg sunny side up with Comté and Espelette pepper ($13), Ham with Comté ($18), Ham and sautéed mushrooms with Comté ($18), Egg with sautéed mushrooms and Comté ($18), Egg with ham, sautéed mushrooms and Comté ($20), and Chorizo with egg, Comté and Espelette pepper ($17).
The menu lists all their products by numbers, by the way.
I previously got the No. 6 ($18) which came folded neatly with sunny side up, sautéed mushrooms and Comté.
The buckwheat base had that faint toasty aroma and a thin crispness at the edges, while the centre remained soft.
As for the sweeter side, crêpes range from Brown sugar with French butter ($9), Raspberry jam ($11), Manuka honey ($12), Valrhona chocolate 70 percent ($11), Salted caramel ($12), to Homemade hazelnut spread ($12).
There are also specials like Raspberry jam with berries and strawberry basil gelato ($15) and Caramelised apple with salted caramel ($14).
You may consider getting the No. 25 ($12) Salted Caramel Crêpe.
The crêpe layer was thin, pliant and slightly chewy, the kind that folds instead of tears.
I would recommend adding gelato (additional $5, from Birds of Paradise), and the dark chocolate sorbet and salted caramel flavours actually worked together in a way that avoided becoming too sweet.
Meals here do not come cheap. Prices hover on the higher side for casual dining, but the craft behind the galettes and the quality of the imported ingredients help justify it.
