Walking into Maxi Coffee Bar feels like arriving back at a familiar friend’s place. A friend who just moved house.
The team behind it started off modestly, and they’ve kept that spirit even as they move through new chapters.
After the sudden closure of their previous space at Ann Siang Hill, they’ve now re-opened at 64 Club Street (back entrance along Ann Siang), not too far from their old home.
The new location is definitely larger than the last, but still keeps the intimate, neighbourhood café feel.
From the outside, it’s marked by a cheerful mural of children at play (looks like the owners when they were young) and a few terrazzo benches.
Inside, the mood shifts into something sleek and social.
The narrow room wraps around a central bar counter where baristas work in full view.
There are two key espresso bases: El Filo #1 from Nariño, Colombia (red apple, plum, white tea) and Urabeast from Guji, Ethiopia (tropical fruit, berries, chocolate).
For something bright and easy, the black espresso drinks are clean and fruit-forward, while the milk-based ones show more comfort and roundness.
Food wise, options include Tomatoes on Toast ($9) with heirloom tomatoes, mozzarella and basil, Cashew Butter Toast ($7.50) made with miso cashew butter and fruit jam, and Kaya Butter Toast ($7.50) with pandan kaya and egg butter,
There are also heartier sandwiches like Ploughman’s ($15), Roast Chicken ($15) and Tuna Melt ($15).
I went for the B.E.C. Muffin ($9.50), which was a comfort classic done right.
The English muffin was lightly toasted and airy. Inside was a baked omelette with a soft, almost custardy texture, crisp bacon, and cheese. It was yums.
I also had a Banana Bread ($6), which arrived warm with a golden crust and a soft, fragrant middle.
The maple butter was a quiet triumph, melting into the slice and adding just the right sweetness.
Maxi Coffee Bar retained their identity, sharpened their craft, and shown resilience.
Welcome back, Maxi. I’ll definitely be returning for more.
