Tiong Bahru Food Centre is back in business (yeah), drawing crowds once more with its wide range of local hawker fare.
For many regulars, a trip here is not complete without a plate of roast meats.

Lee Hong Kee Cantonese Roasted stands out as one of the most established names in the centre.
With a history stretching back to the 1960s, this family-run stall is known for its charcoal-roasted meats, just like in the early days.
The hawkers behind the counter carved each portion with practised speed, and when my plate arrived, it looked good. (With that said, Google rating are not super high. I glanced through and there were few grumbles about portion size and service.)
Basic plates include Char Siew Rice ($3.50), Roasted Pork Rice ($4), Roasted Duck Rice ($4), and Roasted Chicken Rice ($3.50).
I saw most ordering combination plates such as Roasted Duck Char Siew Rice ($6), or a combination of three of Roasted Duck Roasted Pork Char Siew Rice ($8).
Then came the moment… each char siew slice was firm yet tender, with a thin layer of fat that almost melted in the mouth.
The caramelised edge gave a slight crunch and a sweet note, but the sugar never overwhelmed the natural flavour of the pork.
Some stalls drown the meat in sauce or gave too little, but here, the amount was just right.
Next up was the roast pork. The skin gave a satisfying crunch that did not turn too soggy, even after a few minutes on the plate.
Some reviewers rate it around seven out of ten, and I would agree. Not a showstopper, but done well.
For a change of pace, I ordered Wanton Noodle with the roast meats.
The noodles were firm, bouncy, and not starchy. The sauce leaned sweet, so it might take a little getting used to if you’re not into that.
Queues reach their peak at lunchtime. It moves at a moderate steady pace, so bring a bit of patience.
