Some bowls of Bak Chor Mee in Singapore win fans for their springy noodles, others for their punchy seasoning or tender pork slices.
At Ah Fong Noodle 亞峯 in Holland Village Food Centre, though, I think it’s all about the meatballs.
If you’re on the hunt for something a little different in your minced meat noodles, this is one stall to consider.
The menu at Ah Fong Noodle features Bak Chor Mee ($4.50/$5.50), Fishball Noodle ($4.50/$5.50), Meatball Noodle ($4.50/$5.50), Fusion Fishball Noodle ($4.50/$5.50), and Jumbo Bak Chor Mee ($5.50/$7.00).
I was wondering what their Double Taste Meatball Noodle ($4.50) entails.
The noodles arrived piping hot, tossed in vinegar and chilli, topped with sliced pork, minced meat, mushrooms, and the stall’s famous double-taste meatballs.
One type was a little more ordinary, while the other had a savoury broth centre. Think Fuzhou fishballs, but a meat version.
The outer layer was smooth and springy, giving way to a warm, almost soupy core. Plus, these were generously sized and well-seasoned too.
The noodles themselves were on the softer side. If you enjoy your noodles springy and bouncy, you might be left wishing for a bit more bite.
Here, the vinegar and chilli were balanced but not particularly robust. Some may wish for a sharper vinegary finish, though it is well-suited for customers who prefer a milder take.
