Also known as the “Tiong Bahru Bak Chor Mee” or “Sixties Chaozhou Traditional Minced Meat Noodle”, this old Bak Chor Mee gem has reopened at Havelock Road Food Centre.
Uncle has reopened the stall, with a signature that says “Authentic Teochew Tradition Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle”.
Having been around since the 1960, the stall used to be located at Seng Poh Road but had to end operations after the previous kopitiam closed.
On the menu are Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle ($5, $6, $7), Fishball Noodles ($4), and Teochew Dumpling Noodles ($5, $6, $7).
Prices are kept the same.
The flavour is as old-school as it gets, featuring a vinegary punch.
Usually, the mee kia and mee pok are cooked just right, providing a satisfying bite that beautifully contrasts with the tender minced meat and succulent slices of braised mushrooms.
As I have tried this a couple of times, I’ve noticed the springiness of the noodles and sauce mix isn’t always consistent, as it depends on who is cooking.
Sometimes, an excessive amount of pepper is added to the soup, making it unusually peppery.
Otherwise, the pork broth would have been very tasty.
While I would go if I see if it is Uncle Chye cooking, he would often take breaks here and there.
Worthy to mention are the soft braised mushrooms and dumplings included with dried sole fish.
If you order the more expensive bowl, Uncle would include fresh Ang Kah prawns bought from Tiong Bahru Market.
