I used to eat these two Wanton Mee stalls from Old Airport Road Food Centre during secondary school days (In case you are wondering, it was Chung Chung High… a walk away.)
Back then, Hua Kee Hougang Famous Wanton Mee and Cho Kee Noodle, with its electronic queue display, were the go-to stalls.
You can tell the popularity of Cho Kee as they were one of the few stalls with such a system back then.
There was a “Yummy King” programme (during my childhood days), which had people voting for their favourite Wanton Mee. Cho Kee won over the taxi drivers, while Hua Kee claimed the top spot with viewer votes.
Things have of course changed. Hua Kee is now known simply as “Hougang Famous Wan Ton Mee” and moved to the back of the food centre, and popularity not like before.
Cho Kee Noodle has been around since 1965.
The stall is now run by the third generation, and their springy noodles set them apart.
They don’t just serve the usual egg noodles—you’ll find options like spinach, beetroot, seaweed, and whole grain (+$0.50).
And the best part?
These aren’t just coloured noodles; they’re actually infused with real vegetables, which makes them feel a little healthier (at least that’s what I like to tell myself).
Cho Kee Noodle offers Wanton Noodle ($4.50), Fried Wanton Noodle ($5.50), Mushroom Noodle ($5.00), Dumpling Noodle ($4.50), Shredded Chicken Hor Fun ($4.50), and Chicken Feet Noodle ($4.00).
Soups and sides include Dumpling Soup ($4.50), Wanton Soup ($4.50), Fried Wanton ($4.00), and Vegetable ($4.50).
Their Fried Wanton Noodle ($5.50) arrived with crispy fried wantons, a couple of soup ones, slices of char siew, and some greens on the side.
The noodles had a nice bite to them, not mushy at all, and soaked up the sauce really well.
The char siew though was on the leaner side, and some may prefer it fattier with more bite.
My favourite part? The fried wantons. They were crispy to the point of shattering when bitten into, with a well-seasoned filling inside.
Oh yes, if the soup had been a little less watered down, it would have made the meal even better.
Despite the challenges of running a family business, Cho Kee has managed to keep their quality consistent while adapting to changing times.
With their signature noodles and a variety of toppings like dumplings, mushrooms, and braised chicken feet, they remain a reliable choice for a good plate of Wanton Mee.
