Mon Kee Café 旺記冰室 is a Hong Kong-style cha chaan teng known for its silky scrambled eggs, house-made char siew, and straightforward, comforting classics.
Now, Mon Kee has brought its signature flavours to Singapore.
The brand has launched a stall at The Food Place by Food Republic in Raffles City.
However, this is not a full-fledged café but a food court stall.
Worry not, as Mon Kee will serve its famous creamy scrambled eggs, char siew rice, corned beef and egg sandwiches, and Hong Kong style milk tea.
The team is working with local restaurateur Ken Loon, known for The Naked Finn and BurgerLabo.
A chef trained in Hong Kong will be present to ensure the food stays true to its roots.
Back to the Hong Kong outlet, Mon Kee Café 旺記冰室 is recognisable with a picture of a monkey on the signboard.
Contrary to their name, they certainly do not monkey around with their food. What makes them stand out is how they add variation to the otherwise typical Hong Kong café fare.
The menu is simple but carefully executed. For small eateries like these, focusing on a few key offerings often works in their favour.
The most popular dish is the Scrambled Eggs on Rice 日本滑蛋飯, which you can have with prawns, BBQ pork slices or both.
I tried the combination with both prawns and pork, topped with scrambled eggs and the house-made sweet soy sauce.
Mon Kee Café uses imported eggs from Japan, scrambled with premium Japanese milk for a silky smooth texture.
Their char siew and the sweet soy sauce that goes over the rice are both made in house.
The eggs were silky and delicious, just as you would hope from a proper Hong Kong café. The sauce complemented the eggs without overpowering them.
I also ordered the Luncheon Meat and Macaroni in Thick Tomato Soup Set 特濃蕃茄湯午餐肉粒通粉, which looked especially comforting.
The fried luncheon meat cubes were addictive and the tangy broth balanced out the flavours.
The macaroni sets came with multigrain toast and a small portion of scrambled eggs.
Mon Kee is popular among the working crowd for good reason.
The prices are reasonable, service is quick, and the food is both tasty and comforting.
Adding their own twist to local classics has won them a loyal following among food lovers.
