If you’ve ever wanted to have desserts in a shop that looks like your grandmother’s attic collided with a Japanese toy museum, Takara House is where you go.
Part vintage boutique, part dessert café, this little second-floor space above Haji Lane is anything but typical.
Even with a bright orange sign overhead, it can be easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.
I almost felt like I discovered a treasure trove in the touristy Kampong Glam
You climb a narrow stairwell lined with stuffed toys and secondhand fashion, and suddenly find yourself surrounded by Anpanman figurines, antique trinkets, and a counter serving cakes.
Since this is a food blog, I am focusing a little more on M.Patisserie.
A solo effort, sweet treats include a range of artisanal tarts such as Strawberry Tart ($15), Lemon Meringue Tart ($12), Blueberry Manuka Cheese Tart ($14), Japanese Matcha Tart ($15), Peanut Milk Chocolate Tart ($13), Cream Brulee Tart ($13), and Chocolate Hazelnut Tart ($13).
For sliced cakes, they offer Matcha Pistachio Shortcake ($15), Chocolate Mousse Cake ($8.90), and Strawberry Shortcake ($13).
As these are not mass-produced (understandably with no economies of scale), they are slightly on the pricier side.
The Matcha Pistachio Shortcake ($15) was a clear favourite for me, with a focus on texture.
The base was fluffy sponge packed with matcha, earthy and slightly bitter. Above that sat a crisp nutty layer, followed by a smooth pistachio mousse that tied it together.
The Lemon Meringue Tart ($12) had a sharp lemon curd that came through fast.
It was bright, fresh, and not too sweet. The meringue on top was soft and slightly toasted, adding a light sweetness and air.
Drink options include Long Black ($4.00 hot, $5.00 cold), White Coffee ($4.50 hot, $5.50 cold), and a selection of teas like Gemmaicha ($3.00), Citrus Blossom Tea ($6.00), and Yuzu Manuka Honey ($5.80).
Paired with the offbeat surroundings, Takara House x M.Patisserie feels more like an experience than just a dessert stop in a vintage shop.
Such a cool place with character.
