The Interim Bukit Timah Wet Market & Food Centre was recently opened to accommodate stallholders from the original Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre, which closed for redevelopment.
The interim centre, located at Jalan Seh Chuan, will function until 2029 when a new integrated facility is expected to be completed. This temporary market hosts around 100 stalls.
The common question: is my favourite stall still around?
Despite concerns about higher rents, approximately half of the original stallholders have moved to continue their operations during the redevelopment period.
Unfortunately, some of the previous favourites have decided not to continue.
Thankfully, the well-loved He Zhong Carrot Cake can still be found.
He Zhong is one of Singapore’s well-known spots for White Chai Tow Kway.
Unlike many other stalls that offer both white and black versions, He Zhong specialises solely in the white variant.
This approach reflects their commitment to a specific style, and they have been perfecting their recipe for decades.
Priced at $3.50, $4.50, and $5.50, the White Carrot Cake arrives looking like a flat pancake-like creation made from cubes of radish cake.
What sets it apart is that the cubes are fried with a generous amount of egg, creating a mildly crispy exterior that contrasts with the soft radish cake within.
Something I liked is the Carrot Cake is not overly greasy.
However, some might find it lacks the intense flavours that other versions offer.
For those looking for a spicier kick, do add some of the chilli (some diners feel that without it, the dish can taste a bit plain).
One of the common comments from regulars is the occasional fluctuation in quality. Depending on who is behind the wok, the level of crispness and wok hei (the smoky charred flavour) can vary.
However, when it hits the mark, He Zhong’s carrot cake is among the best in Singapore.
