There is always something new at Joo Chiat, and this café proves it is just not another ordinary one.
Big Short Coffee found at Fowlie Road offers a refreshing twist on the typical coffee experience.
The café aims to craft something unique that resonates with both the baristas and their customers.
This approach is evident in the seasonal menu that not only changes with the time of year but also incorporates techniques from diverse disciplines such as molecular gastronomy and cocktail making.
The café is pretty compact though, with four seats at the counter, while the rest would be seated on stools around.
The limited seating might pose a challenge during peak hours, but it adds to the intimate vibe that makes this place special.
The coffee here is not quite like the ordinary, with cocktail-inspired coffee creations.
Options include the Bee’s Knees ($8) featuring cold brew, strawberry, pine nut, coastal wildflower honey, and fresh honeycomb ($8).
For something different, try the Young Harry ($8), which combines cold brew with jasmine green tea, raw fresh coconut water, and roasted pistachio cream.
If you prefer a more classic flavor with a twist, the Mont Blanc ($8) offers cold brew, nutmeg, orange, Okinawa black sugar, and vanilla cream.
Since it is the Number 1 on the menu, I went for the Happy Valley Punch ($8.50) – a mix of espresso, blood orange, bergamot, earl grey, and clarified coconut milk.
No regrets.
After sipping, the vibrant citrusy burst from the blood orange and bergamot immediately refreshed me. The subtle earl grey finish added a pleasant touch that lingered.
But my preference drink was actually the Bus Uncle ($8).
This comes with colourful layers of osmanthus tea, watermelon juice, and coastal wildflower honey, topped with ginger bubbles (the instagram factor) and pink peppercorn.
The drink’s layered flavors kept my palate engaged from start to finish.
Despite the creative drinks on offer, the café also caters to those who prefer more conventional options.
There are options like espresso, black coffee, and lattes made from their house blend, a mix of Brazilian and Colombian beans.
The limited seating and the fact that it can get quite crowded might be a downside for some. The café’s popularity means you might have to wait for a spot, especially during peak hours.
But if you are in the area and appreciate a well-crafted, different coffee experience, Big Short Coffee is worth the detour.
