United Square Shopping Mall at Novena may not be the first place that comes to mind when it comes to food, but there is a hidden zi char and Chinese cuisine gem to be found at its basement.

Crown Prince Kitchenette is where you can get a taste of true Malaysian-style zi char and extensive range of Chinese cuisine.

Accordingly, the kitchen is run by experienced chefs from Malaysia powered to deliver more authentic flavours and bold aromas, making it a place of choice for family meals.

If you are undecided at what to get, some of their top favourite dishes include Homemade Tofu with Crabmeat & Pumpkin Sauce ($10.80), Signature Braised Pork Belly with Yellow Wine Gravy ($16.80), Signature Fried Chicken with Crispy Ginger Slices ($14.80), Signature Honey Pork Rib Cubes with Yam Patties ($16.80) and Roast Meat Duo Platter ($28.80).

Check out the recommended dishes from Crown Prince Kitchenette:

Signature Crispy “Chao Ta” Beehoon with Seafood ($10.80)
You might have seen this dish before in Malaysia, but it is not that common here as it requires skills and time to prepare.

At the heart of this signature dish is rice vermicelli cooked in a special way such that it resembles a thin crisp pancake.

Do not worry as no actual parts are ‘chao ta’ or burnt – the naming is because the outer layer of the beehoon dish is crispy.

The technique of pressing the noodles into the wok after cooking and allowing it to sizzle to a crisp gives it that alluring smokiness.

The other side remains quite soft, included with a medley of fresh seafood like squid, prawns, and fish slices and some leafy greens.

Wok-fried Rice with Crab Meat ($10.80)
Get lured by the wok hei of their signature Fried Rice which is light and fluffy, and not oily and greasy.

Included with chunks of crab meat and toppings of tobiko, this dish is quite reasonably priced.

Other noodle & rice dishes available include the Silky Egg Hor Fun with Seafood ($9.80), Silky Egg Crispy Noodles with Seafood ($9.80), Braised E-Fu Noodles with Mushrooms ($9.80) and Wok-Fried Rice with Salted Egg & Chinese Sausage ($9.80).

Signature Yellow Wine Chicken in Claypot ($16.80)
A traditional Hakka dish of Wong Zhao Kai that is very nourishing (and helps to dispel wind).

A whole chicken is simmered in a specially aged yellow rice wine to tenderise its meat.

The technique of cooking it in a claypot distributes the heat more evenly and makes the chicken meat fall-off-the-bone succulent.

My favourite component was actually the ‘soup’ which was indeed flavourful, with distinct wine flavour that gets the warmth going through the body.

While some versions of this dish can be on the greasy side, this was not too oily at all and good to go with a bowl of rice.

Malaysian-style Claypot Herbal Bak Kut Teh ($28.80 for 2 pax, available only during lunch)
Come during lunch with a friend or family member to try their Malaysian-style Claypot Herbal Bak Kut Teh ($28.80 for 2 pax).

Created using the chef’s own recipe, the aromatic soup is composed of a secret blend of herbs and spices.

The set also includes servings of braised peanuts, dough fritters, blanched lettuce, and fragrant rice.

Spinach & Clams in Broth ($12.80)
A soothing clear broth cradling a mix of fresh clams and spinach. This dish also features a trio of eggs – regular, salted and century to add a variety of textures and flavours.

The result is a bowl brimming with savoury comforting goodness perfect for sipping on a chilly day.

Steamed Patin Fish in Special Nyonya Sauce ($58.00)
This Chef Recommended specialty features a whole Patin fish steamed in pristine state to keep its natural sweetness.

The fresh, tender flesh and aromatic fat of the Patin fish is enhanced with a special Nyonya sauce – a quad-dimensional blend of sweet, sour, spicy and savoury flavours.

Golden Prawns with Popcorn ($16.80)
Made with fresh and plump whole prawns seasoned and deep-fried till mildly crisp on the outside yet juicy on the inside.

These bouncy prawns are coated with a luscious butter sauce to add a silkiness to the texture.

There is a modern take to this dish as it is served with fresh-popped crunchy popcorn – guess it is to appeal to the kids.

Chicken Lollipop with Cereal ($14.80)
Using a technique that pushes the meat of the wing to the end to form a ball, you get easy-to-eat chicken ‘lollipops’.

The chicken is deep-fried till golden brown and crunchy good, then coated in a tasty cereal (like the Cereal Prawn dish).

You get those buttery, milky notes with the unique scent of curry leaves.

Yam Paste with Pumpkin Sauce ($5.00)
Cap your meal with a healthier version of a Teochew dessert aka Orh Nee.

Made with pureed yam cooked till silky and creamy, this dessert with served with an aromatic pumpkin sauce instead of the traditional coconut cream.

Other refreshing desserts include the Mango Sago ($5), Longan with Sea Coconut ($4), Double-boiled Peach Gum with Red Dates ($9), to Double-boiled Bird’s Nest ($20) for that nourishing, beautifying factor.
