Kura Patisserie & Bakery previously located at The Herencia (Kim Yam Road), has moved to a new location at 79 South Bridge Road – somewhat near the Boat Quay area.
The name “Kura” 蔵 in Japanese stands for a “storehouse”, a place where the owners would ‘store’ treasured pastries for customers.
Some of its signature cakes include the La Vie En Rose, Honey Passion Sake, Strawberry Pink Guava Cheese Cake, and Mango Citrus.
The La Vie En Rose Tart is one of its most popular for obvious reasons.
Other than the instagrammable appearance, the inside is made of smooth and rich dark chocolate cream, sea salt chocolate and cacao nibs that promises an indulgent bite and sweet sensation with a touch of (sea) saltiness.
This time, I also tried the ‘black rose’ verison called Goma Yuzu Mochi. The good-looker includes black sesame cream, kochi yuzu curd and mochi on a tart, with both earthy roasted notes from the black sesame and bright tones from yuzu.
The sticky rice cake filling was a surprise as well.
Cakes are generally on a rotational basis, and there can be other attractive choices such as Matcha Tiramisu, Chestnut Mont Blanc, Hazelnut Paris Brest, Banana Whiskey and Camembert Brie Basque Cheese Cake.
The Key Lime is one of their recommended, containing a combination of tartness and sweetness complimented by the zesty key lime juice.
Instead of a firmer curd inside, they café uses French almond cream which provided a softer, smoother texture.
Other than the sweet bites, there are pastries of Croissant, Pain Au Chocolate, Almond Croissant, Chocolate Almond Croissant, Brown Butter Madeline, Mixed Fruit Scone and Focaccia with Confit Tomatoes.
If you are craving for something more savoury, there are “Chow Time” offerings available after 11am including Japanese Beef Curry Toast ($15.50), Shrooms Spinach Toast ($14.50), Miso Roasted Chicken Toast ($15.50), Sundried Tomato Focaccia ($8.50) and Portobello Cheese Foccacia ($8.50).
