Empress Road may not ring a bell that immediately for foodies, but there is the under-rated Empress Road Food Centre and Bakery Brera & Fine Foods.
CROCO Snack Coffee Bar is a new addition to the neighbourhood, though it has nothing to do with the “Crock Snacks Crackers”.
Short for croissant and coffee, this is a primary coffee, pastries and cakes takeaway shop, though you can lean by the counter for a quick drink. Fuss-free, simple set up.
In terms of pastries, there were the Croissant ($3.50), Pain Au Chocolat ($4.50), Kouign-Amann ($4.80). There were supposedly more, but they “didn’t arrive yet from the central kitchen” when I visited.
Their Croissant ($3.50) made with the award-winning Lescure butter was crisp, in fact very crisp considering the humidity of Singapore (one of the greatest challenges for croissants produced here).
Compared to some others which are generally either fluffy or dense, these were light, with numerous layers and remarkably flaky texture.
However, my friend said he would prefer the Croissant to be have more of the buttery fragrance – which I agree. The texture may also be perceived by some others as dry.
Coffee offered include the usual Espresso ($3.50), Long Black ($4.50, $5.50), Iced Long Black ($6), White ($5, $6), and Iced White ($6.50). Coffee beans are roasted and supplied by Coffee Plus, their sister company which is a short walk away.
While Coffee Plus at Queen’s Road focuses more on single origin, CROCO uses a Brazilian blend which has a smoothing mellow medium-bodied mouthfeel and dark chocolate notes.
There is a sizable expat community around here, so perhaps they can banking for customers who need to grab a cuppa in the morning and go.
