Sometimes I find it challenging to get find artisanal cakes when the sweet tooth craving strikes, as many of the interesting patisseries are usually located in central town areas.

It got me a little excited to find Eclipse, a French patisserie which has conveniently opened in the heartland of Hougang at Stars of Kovan, a short 5-8 mins’ walk from Kovan MRT.

While Eclipse operates as a takeaway store, you can still dine outside which has a few common tables shared by the tenants in the premises.

I was greeting by a display counter which showcases some of their signature bake offerings – fruit tartelettes and chocolate bakes.

All priced at $7, you can get Tartelettes of flavours such as Blueberry, Mangoes & Cream and Mixed Fruits.

Each fruit tartelette is delicately assembled using French sweet pastry crust as base, almond frangipane, mixed fruit confit or vanilla cream and topped with hefty serving of fresh fruits.

I liked that the tarts are generally not too sweet, and the flavours are well-defined by the ripeness of the fruit used.

In this case, subtle sweetness with a hint of sourish tang of berries.

My only qualm was that the sweet pastry crust, while buttery and crispy, could be a little over-baked as it required quite some effort to cut though.

For chocolate lovers, go for the Chocolate Tartelette which uses cocoa-infused crust pastry and dark chocolate buttercream that boast fragrant and intense cocoa flavours.

My vote goes to their sliced Hazelnut Dark Chocolate Cake ($7), layered using moist chocolate sponge cake, dark chocolate buttercream infused with hazelnut praline and a crunchy nut base.

Very rich and fudgy.

This is also available in sizes of 4” for $27 and 6” for $45.

Other bakes available are such as Croissant ($3.50), Burnt Cheese Cake ($7), Biscotti ($7), Jar of Cookies ($17) and Jar of Chocolates ($20).
