Remember the “Imperial Theme Cookies tins” last year when Yanxi Palace was a big hit?

Baker’s Brew continues to bring delicious Chinese New Year cookies in gorgeous-looking packaging tins.

This year, it will be a walk down memory lane.

Known to be Singapore’s leading baking and cake company, Bakers Brew Chinese New Year cookies takes on the theme of “Peranakan Nostalgia”.

In terms of presentation, what you get are miniature versions of old-school biscuit tins splashed with vibrant and fanciful colours of the Peranakan culture.

Packed within the tins are delightful cookies, with the recipes striking a balance between retaining the well-liked traditional flavours, yet with an element of reinvention for that modern twist.

The “Peranakan Nostalgia” cookies can be bought online, Baker’s Brew retail locations (Paragon, Great World City, Upper Thomson, Sembawang), or at pop-up kiosks (Causeway Point, Nex,Ngee Ann City Takashimaya, Suntec City, TANGS, Tampines Mall, VivoCity).

Wondering what to have? Here are 5 flavours in the Peranakan Nostalgia Collection, and what we like best:

Signature Ondeh Ondeh Cookies ($26.80)
As Baker Brew’s best sellers for CNY, the Ondeh Ondeh Cookies are back by popular demand.

If you love your Ondeh Ondeh with caramelised palm sugar and aromatic grated coconut, you would love this modern twist.

These aromatic pandan-flavoured cookies contain a substantial amount of Gula Melaka coconut filling that is slow cooked for hours.

This produces a mellow and flavourful sweet taste, complemented with the crunchy yet moist coconut fillings. Easily the favourite of them all.

Black Sesame Cookies ($26.80)
This is what I would describe as having tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) in the form of a cookie.

The black sesame cookies are a combination of roasted black sesame and brown butter, and sprinkled with black and white sesame seeds and sea salt for finishing.

Packed with textures and flavours, I loved the smell of aromatic black sesame after the first bite into the crunchy cookie texture.

The earthy tones of the roasted black sesame and nutty notes of brown butter will come after, well balanced by a dash of sea salt for a more refined taste.

Tutu Kueh Peanut Cookies ($26.80)
Shaped liked a tutu kueh, another traditional snack made from steamed rice flour and palm sugar, these cookies come made with roasted peanuts.

The texture crumbles easily with a melt-in-the-mouth sensation and distinctive nutty tones from the roasted peanuts.

Great for those who love that interplay of crunchy and soft-earthy sensation.

Peranakan Pineapple Tarts – Less Sweet ($26.80)
Whenever CNY is approaching, those calorie and sugar charts will start appearing on the social media feed.

Well, you can worry less this year because this quintessential CNY snack now comes with a less sugar, less sweet version.

Baker’s Brew version of Peranakan Pineapple Tarts are made up of butter and cheese with homemade premium moist Thai pineapple paste with a flaky texture.

While they are indeed not as sweet as the usual ones, the flavours of the tangy-fruity pineapple is still there, great for the health-conscious who do not want to compromise on taste.

Cheddar Spiced Gems ($26.80)
Love those nostalgic Iced Gem biscuits with pastel-coloured sugared toppings?

These inventive CNY cookies will be the talk of the table when it is served.

What you get are old school biscuits redefined with a savoury cheddar cheese biscuit base, topped with tangy lemon royal icing, finished with a hint of Cayenne spice for that delicate kick at the end.

Warning: can be very addictive.
