$46++ for a weekend high tea buffet, with a 1-for-1 deal? Which means it works out to $23++ per person.
That was probably the first thing that caught my attention about Peach Garden’s Weekend High Tea Buffet.
Dim sum can add up quite quickly these days, especially when you are ordering for a family or a bigger group. That is why this buffet feels quite value-for-money.
It is available at both Peach Garden OCBC Centre and Thomson Plaza from 3pm to 5pm during the weekends.
I visited the OCBC Centre outlet at Chulia Street, which is located on the 33rd floor.
Raffles Place MRT is the nearest station, and the walk is roughly a few minutes from the station area (Exit B).
As the restaurant is high up, give yourself a little time for the lift and building access, especially if you are coming during peak hours.
The OCBC Centre outlet has one clear advantage over many usual dim sum places, and that is the view.
From up there, the restaurant looks out across the Singapore River, City Hall, Esplanade, MBS and Singapore Flyer, with the city skyline in the distance.
The set up is quite traditional in parts, and the atmosphere gets bustling during the peak high tea hours.
Some dim sum items come around in push cart trolleys, which gives the meal a more old-school feel, the kind where you look at what is available, ask what is inside, then pick a basket or two (or more) for the table.
The dim sum selection includes a number of rotating items.
These include Steamed Siew Mai with Fish Roe, Steamed Fresh Prawn Dumpling, Steamed Barbecue Pork Bun, Steamed Creamy Custard Bun, Steamed Dumpling in Sichuan Style, Steamed Chicken Feet with Chef’s Special Sauce, and Steamed Pork Rib with Black Bean Sauce.
A basket of siew mai, prawn dumplings or fried dim sum on the à la carte menu can be around $7.80++ to $9.80++, so after a few rounds, the bill can climb without you realising it.
That is why this buffet feels so easy on the wallet.
The Steamed Creamy Custard Bun was probably the most photogenic item we had. Once pulled apart, the yellow custard flowed out quite easily, with that rich salted egg sweetness.
(The ala carte pricing would have been $8.80++ for 3 pcs.)
My favourite item was the Steamed Siew Mai with Fish Roe, which had a firm, meaty bite and a juicy filling, topped with orange roe that popped.
The Steamed Pork Rib with Black Bean Sauce felt more old-school, with pork ribs sitting in a light savoury sauce and black beans scattered over the top.
It had that familiar Cantonese restaurant flavour.
Looking out for fried dim sum items?
There were also rotating items such as Deep Fried Prawn Dumpling with Salad Cream, Deep Fried Seafood Roll with Wasabi, Deep Fried Mango Prawn Roll, Deep Fried Yam Dumpling and even Deep Fried Lychee Ball Tree.
The Deep Fried Bean Skin Roll with Prawn and Seaweed was one of the better fried items I tried. The outside had a crisp layer, while the prawn filling gave it some sweetness.
Apart from dim sum, there is also a live Laksa station. The bowl was kept to a manageable size, with thick rice noodles, egg, gravy and toppings.
The laksa was not the strongest or most intense version around, but it did its job as a warm, comforting bowl in the middle of the buffet.
The cooked food section was laid out more like a buffet line, with a row of dishes in chafing trays.
There were Roasted Crispy Peking Duck, Pig Trotter’s in Black Vinegar, Steamed Prawn with Chinese Herbal, Stir Fried Noodles with Superior Soya Sauce, Stir Fried Broccoli with Minced Garlic and Braised Chicken in Soy Sauce.
The Peking Duck is probably the item most people would look out for, as it adds a more special Chinese restaurant dish to the dim sum spread.
Here, the duck came already wrapped in pancake with sauce, so it was easy to pick up from the buffet line and share at the table.
The Pig Trotter’s in Black Vinegar had a stronger, more homely flavour compared to the other dishes, which would appeal more to those who enjoy traditional flavours.
If you are looking for something belly-warming, the Steamed Prawn with Chinese Herbal is lighter, served in a gentle broth with a light medicinal sweetness that helps cut through some of the heavier items.
Don’t forget to end the meal with a sweet treat, with options such as Chilled Mango Sago with Pomelo, Sweet Red Bean Soup, or Chilled Jelly Royale with Julienne of Coconut.
The appeal is really in the price, the variety, and the chance to have a mix of push cart dim sum, cooked dishes, laksa and dessert without ordering everything à la carte.
At $46++ with a 1-for-1 deal, it makes sense for families and groups who already plan to gather over a weekend meal.
