Chen Fa Fish Soup 臣發魚湯 used to be a ‘hidden gem’ at Lower Delta Road, and has since moved to New Bahru at the revamped Factory Block side.

The menu is focused and offers several varieties of fresh fish. Options include Batang Fish Soup ($6.50 small, $9 large), Grouper Fish Soup ($8.50 small, $11.50 large), and Silver Pomfret Fish Soup ($9 small, $13 large).

For a more complete meal, you can choose the Batang Fish Soup Set Meal ($10.50 small, $12.50 large), which comes with Seaweed Xia Zao Rolls and your choice of rice or noodles.

That’s not all. You can also customise your bowls with seasonal add-ons like Oysters ($4), Fish Roe ($2), or Fish Milt ($2).

The owners take a lot of pride in their craft, which is evident from their philosophy of serving soup that is sweet, smooth, and heart-warming.

I tried the Batang Fish Soup ($9 for large) and found the quality to be impressive for a coffee shop setting.

The fish is hand-sliced daily at the stall to ensure that every piece is fresh and substantial. It is firm to the touch but remains tender when you bite into it.

They specifically highlight their use of fresh fish, slow-cooked over a gentle flame to lock in the natural sweetness.

The first thing I noticed when I took a sip was that the soup was clear (unlike the usual milky styles found elsewhere), with a subtle hint of Chinese wine and ginger that enhances the flavour.

I also added on the homemade Seaweed Chicken Prawn Rolls for the set.

They were stuffed with real, visible prawns rather than just a mystery paste, fried until they reached a satisfying level of crispness.

This coffee shop at Lower Delta Road is a no-frills environment, but the warmth of the soup makes up for the industrial surroundings.

If you find yourself in the Bukit Merah area, it is worth visiting this new stall before the secret gets out and the queues become much longer.
