Komunal at Changi Road may be small, but it manages to pack in plenty of charm.
It employs and supports staff with special needs through MIJ Hub, and that shows in the warmth of the space.
The under-the-radar coffee space is found near Eunos MRT, modest in size, with barely ten seats inside and a handful outside.
If you blink you might just miss it.
The menu is short, neat and straight to the point.
Coffee comes as espresso ($4), long black ($4), white ($6), mocha ($8), tasting flight ($9) or a barista-recommended filter.
For the non-coffee drinkers there is matcha ($9.50), chocolate ($6.50 or $8), and a tiny babycino ($2).
The kitchen serves meatballs ($9) and scones ($6.50), though they were sold out when I visited.
I settled instead on a flat white with their Vanta blend, and honestly, it made up for the lack of scones.
The beans are a mix from Colombia and Brazil, medium roasted. With milk, you get a bit of chocolate at the front, pecan lingering at the back, vanilla cream smoothing it all out.
If you prefer your coffee black, this is moodier, with bold dark chocolate, dried apricot, red apple and a nutty pecan finish.
The staff work at an easy pace, but you notice that time feels different here. It feels calmer, softer, less hurried than the usual café shuffle.
