[Hong Kong] Hybebeans comes from Hypebeast, the Hong Kong-born lifestyle and media company that built its reputation around streetwear and global culture.
Seeing it featured in a number of Youtube travel videos, I went to Hybebeans in Causeway Bay to see how a coffee shop born from a streetwear brand holds up.
Hypebeans is not too difficult to find.
It is located on Fashion Walk, occupying a compact corner space styled after a New York newsstand.
This is not a café made for long afternoons. With just a few stools and counters, it feels more like a quick recharge pit stop.
Other than the usual drinks like Espresso (HKD 35), Macchiato (HKD 40), Cortado (HKD 40), Americano (HKD 40 small, HKD 45 large), Café Latte (HKD 40 small, HKD 45 large), you can find some regional specials here which can be worth an order.
They include the Spiced Espresso Yuenyeung (HKD 50 small, HKD 55 large), Ovaltine Espresso (HKD 50 small, HKD 55 large), Hojicha Latte (HKD 50 small, HKD 55 large) and Charcoal Sesame Latte (HKD 50 small, HKD 55 large).
The Ovaltine Espresso caught my eye straight away. It promised childhood nostalgia in a cup, layering malt sweetness over coffee.
To be honest, not too bad at all. It was comforting and familiar, though the espresso shot struggled to shine against the malt.
The café offers a few pastries, like Pineapple Bun with Butter, Corned Beef Cheese Bagel, cookies and madeleines.
The food here clearly plays a supporting role, which fits the concept of a compact café geared towards drinks first.
The space is small but undeniably stylish.
If you are already in the area, Hypebeans makes for a short pause, a place where the clean design and playful drinks keep you curious.
