I love Bedok 85 Food Centre.

Also known as Fengshan Food Centre, it is a local institution for supper favourites in the East (actually many good eats in the morning as well).

This time I chanced upon One.85 Big Prawn Mee which only opens from 4:30pm to 12am. Ah, a late night Prawn Mee stall.

The stall labels itself “Next Generation Hawkers Upholding Traditional Homemade Recipe” on social media.

Opened by Roger, his wife Erina, and their friend Monica, One.85 Big Prawn Mee focuses on Prawn Noodles made the old-school way.

They fry their own shallots, render pork lard, and simmer broth from pork bones and prawn heads daily.

The menu at One.85 Big Prawn Mee offers a focused selection of prawn and pork noodle dishes in both soup and dry versions.

Options include Prawn Mee ($6.50, $10), Pork Ribs Mee ($6.50, $10), and Signature Jumbo Big Prawn Mee ($13.50, $20).

If you want to go all out, there is always the Signature Colossal Big Prawn Mee ($28, $36). Which I shall leave to another time when I am feeling indulgent to order.

All bowls come with yellow noodles or beehoon (a single size of bee hoon, no choice between thick or thin, no mee pok or mee kia as well).

Waiting didn’t take too long, plus I was given a buzzer to collect the food later.

When the bowl of Pork Ribs Mee ($6.50) arrived, it looked generous.

It came with prawn halves, a few chunks of pork ribs, bee hoon, kangkong, beansprouts, fried shallots, and golden pork lard cubes.

I tasted the broth first. While it looked light, the taste told a story story.

One sip, and I found it relatively gao gao and flavourful, and indeed had a lovely sweet flavour from the prawns.

Talking about the prawns, they were indeed fresh and large (for its price).

The pork ribs were not bad too, tender, and fell apart easily.

As I ordered the dry version, after mixing I could taste the crunch of the fried pork lard alongside fragrant shallots.

Good for those who love some ‘bits and bops’ in your Hae Mee.

I read online that the broth tastes better around later at night? Perhaps next time, I’ll probably go later to catch the broth at its best.
