Flanders Square isn’t exactly the first place that pops up when you’re plotting a café trail in Singapore.

It sits between Little India and Jalan Besar, that stretch where old-school charm rubs shoulders with new indie energy.

That’s where romme. steps in—a sleek, no-fuss café that feels like it’s built to slow you down.

‘Romme’ is the Norwegian word for contain or accommodate, which feels fitting for a place designed to hold space for quiet catch-ups and slow afternoons.

Inside, it’s all calm.

Bare walls, simple wood tables, and cushy cream sofas. The seats are low, the lights are warm, and there’s just enough going on to keep it cosy without tipping into clutter.

You’ll find a mix of spots for quiet solo time and a few bigger tables if you’re rolling in with friends.

The food menu which is foccacia focused, keeps things tight for now.

Sammies include Pork You ($15), with Italian pork sausage, rosé sauce, pistachio cream and baby spinach. The Big Catch ($16) comes with smoked salmon, chives cream, lemon juice, fresh dill, onions and cucumbers.

You’ve Got Beef? ($18) is all about beef bulgogi, homemade kimchi jam, melted mozzarella and arugula. Sides are simple: Fries ($6).

I was curious about the Focaccia Bites. Right at the counter, you can’t miss them.

Flavours during my visit were Kaya, Cheese, Strawberry, Garlic Butter and Chocolate. I went for Kaya and Garlic Butter because you need both sweet and savoury in life.

They look like bomboloni at first glance, but they’re made with house focaccia dough, which makes them denser and oilier, with a solid chew.

The fillings?

The Kaya was lightly sweet with a bit of pandan fragrance but felt a little sparse, while the Garlic Butter had a familiar garlicky kick but leaned more towards your standard garlic bread.

Fine for a snack, but it probably needs something richer or more exciting to pull you back for a second round.

Drinks bring you the classics: Black ($4.50), White ($5), Mocha ($6), Misugaru Latte ($6).

I paired mine with a Misugaru Latte ($6). If you haven’t had Misugaru before, it’s a traditional Korean grain mix that blends roasted barley, brown rice, black beans and a few others into a fine powder.

It gives the drink a nutty, toasty backbone that rounds out the espresso beautifully.

Romme. is the kind of place where you think you’ll stop in for a quick cup. Then you end up staying until your laptop dies because it’s just that comfortable.

Definitely one to have on your radar if you’re nearby. What would you order first?
