This is not my first time having Xiang Ji Lor Mee 香记卤面 • 炸酱面 at Old Airport Road Food Centre.
Regulars would know that in the earlier years, the queue was much shorter than nearby Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee.
However, the tides have somehow turned during the recent years. Xiang Ji is the stall enjoying the longer lines now.
I think this is a combination of Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee’s expansion (and inconsistent quality), social media, word-of-mouth, and Xiang Ji’s prompt and friendly service.
A little backstory: Xiang Ji Lor Mee is said to be established by a couple who previously worked at Xin Mei Xiang.
This background gives Xiang Ji a strong foundation in traditional Lor Mee preparation, leveraging years of experience and expertise. Therefore, you would find both bowls similar in some ways.
Xiang Ji offers their signature bowl at an inexpensive $4 and $5, with top-ups of fish ($2) and egg ($0.80) available.
What I liked was the generous serving of ingredients.
You get tender braised pork belly, mackerel fish flakes, ngoh hiang, and half an egg, which contribute a variety of textures and flavours to each bite.
I also found the gravy itself notably thick and rich, seasoned with a blend of spices that adds a deep, savoury flavour.
The hawker will also ask if you will want to add chilli padi and vinegar which adds a kick of heat and tang.
While the dish is packed with ingredients, there are some components which taste more average, such as the blander fish flakes and generic ngoh hiang.
Despite its popularity, which often results in long queues, the line tends to move quickly, making it a practical choice for a hearty meal.
