While Bukit Merah View Food Centre is one of my favourite hawker centres to hang out, I sometimes go to the 116 coffee shop opposite it.
You will find this humble-looking Fishball Noodle stall having a long line of customers.
Sheng Ji Fishball Noodle 昇记 at Bukit Merah View also offers a taste of traditional Teochew-style Bak Chor Mee (minced meat noodles).
Accordingly, this is based on a 80+ year old recipe.
Despite its long history and popularity, prices remain affordable, with a price point of $4 per bowl, which is remarkable considering Singapore’s rising food prices.
Choices include the Fishball Minced Meat Noodle ($4.00), Fishball Soup ($4.00), flavourful Laksa ($4.00), and Assorted Soup ($4.00).
One thing I noticed is their dual cooking station, which helps to shorten the wait.
Even though it is called Fishball Noodle, the bowl will come with minced pork, fishballs, pork slices, and fish cake, tossed in chilli and fragrant lard.
The noodles have a pleasant bite, even though they were cooked until relatively soft.
If you come here expecting strict Bak Chor Mee of a particular style and strong vinegary punch, then you may feel a tad disappointed?
The flavours here are more subtle. This style is ideal for those who appreciate an old-school, more delicate balance of tastes rather than bold, overpowering flavours.
The freshness of the tender pork slices and fishballs, which are bouncy and well-made, also help elevate the dish.
The Bak Chor Mee may not hit every mark for strong flavours, but its nostalgic appeal and affordability make it a solid option, particularly for those who appreciate the tradition and history behind the recipe.
A well-loved, no-frills, comforting meal.
