Looks like these name changes are for the better.

Shi Nian 石年猪脚饭 which was previously known as Lin Ji Pig Leg Rice 林记猪脚饭, has opened a brand-new outlet at Old Airport Road Food Centre.

This marks its 8th outlet in Singapore, after stalls at Albert Food Centre, Bedok, Chong Pang Hawker, Lavender, Northlink, Ubi and Senja Hawker Centre.

Some of these are franchises.

It is opened by the same team behind Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu – which also owns Nic & Tom Eatery previously called “Fu Er Dai”.

They found better businesses after the name change.

Famous for its Braised Pork Trotters Rice, the recipe is said to be from Longjiang Town in China, made with no salt, no dark sauce, no rock sugar, and no MSG. Ah-huh.

Items spotted on display include Pig Trotter Rice ($5.90), Pig Leg Rice ($5.90), Pork Trotter ($9.60), Pig Intestine ($5), Large Intestine ($5), Prawn Cake ($4.90) and Salted Vegetable ($2).

The Pig Trotter Rice ($5.90) included gelatinous slices braised in premium light sauce, spices and herbs, till they are fall-of-the-bone tender and infused with the marinate.

If you are used to the usual “Kong Bak” style, you would find the marinate on the lighter side, wishing it was more robust.

As I have tried this brand across the years and branches, I noted that it may not be consistent throughout – some would give less sauce; sometimes the pieces would be tougher or not as well marinated.

Therefore, online reviews may be quite mixed depending on the location as well.

Thankfully, the pieces I had in the most recent visit at Old Airport were soft but not too greasy or oily, almost melt in the mouth.

The pickles and dip of the piquant chilli sauce helped to give it extra tanginess and kick.

On a side note, the Prawn Cake priced at $4.90 for a small bowl (used to be $3 for a “Meat Cake” at other locations) may make customers wonder if it is well-worth the price for the top-up.
