Dian Xiao Er‘s popularity is evident from its rise to becoming one of Singapore’s top Chinese restaurant chains over the last two decades.

From humble beginnings dating back to 2002, as a small eatery in Chinatown, today it has 16 outlets across the country and an extensive delivery network.

Do you know: the restaurant’s name “Xiao Er”, refers to the old teahouses and the traditional way to call a server.

A similar sense of antiquity is visible in the menu and the décor of some outlets.

No matter where you dine, the must-have dish at Dian Xiao Er is their Crispy Herbal Roasted Duck. To prepare this mouth-watering delicacy, the chefs use only the choicest of Cherry Valley Ducks.

The duck meat is marinated for an extended period in a concoction of 10 aromatic medicinal herbs. The process also involves pouring cooking wine into the stomach and sealing it to let the flavours seep in.

Freshly roasted till its exterior is golden brown and the skin is crispy, the Roast Duck’s flesh remains tender and luscious.

However, Dian Xiao Er isn’t without continuous gastronomic innovation.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the restaurant has come up with a selection of new and exclusive dishes, available from now till 23 December 2022.

In addition, get $350* worth of dining vouchers as long as you complete all 16 dishes with the “DXE Stamp Card”. (More details at the end of the post)

Claypot Fish Curry 瓦煲咖哩鱼尾 – NEX Exclusive ($24.90, $23.90 member price)
This Claypot Fish Curry exclusively available at NEX’s Dian Xiao Er is one of my favourites for the newly-launched dishes.

A fusion of multiple aromas and seasonings, the dish is a one-claypot wonder consisting of a fish tail served in a rich, fragrant curry with fresh vegetables.

The chef uses a fleshy tail of the red snapper for this piquant preparation. Along with the vegetables, I enjoyed the tau pok (bean curd puffs) which absorbed some of that thick gravy.

Cooking the fish tail and vegetables begins only after the order comes in. This results in soft and flaky fish meat when it arrives on the table in a clay pot.

Comforting, rich, and brimming with tangy goodness, this is good to go with a bowl of rice.

Iberico Pork Slices in Golden Broth 酸汤黑豚片 – Jurong Point Exclusive ($16.90, $15.90 member price)
The Iberico Pork Slices in Golden Broth is a unique creation by Chef Lee from Dian Xiao Er’s Jurong Point outlet.

The inspiration behind the dish’s “golden broth” is Suan Cai Yu – this tangy and spicy Sichuan preparation typically consists of fish and green peppercorns.

However, to make the golden broth more universal in taste, the chef adds spices predominant in the Nanyang and Vietnamese regions.

Consequently, the broth has a pleasant tanginess without excessive spiciness – which is easier on the palate.

Thin slices of beautifully marbled Iberico pork, black fungus, and enoki mushroom further give the dish volume and meatiness.

Black Garlic Steamed Fish Slices 黑蒜生鱼片 – Northpoint Exclusive ($15.60, 14.60 member price)
The Tioman fish is fresh, immaculately sliced, and light to taste. Moreover, steaming the fillet pieces helps keep their nutritional value and gentle sweetness intact.

Embellishing the fish are ingredients that range from cordyceps flower to shimeji mushroom.

Bringing the ingredients together is the fragrant black garlic sauce. The dressing is surprisingly mild so as not to overpower individual tastes.

As a result, every slice promises a bite of savoury deliciousness.

Shrimp Stuffed Eggplant Roll 茄子虾卷 – JEM Exclusive ($11.90, $10.90 member price)
The Shrimp Stuffed Eggplant Roll has a contrasting composition that somehow manages to work wonderfully.

I liked how the shrimp filling kept the roll soft and sweet inside, while the outside had a gentle crisp.

Moreover, the rolls come with a classic sweet chilli dip for that extra bit of a zesty hit.

Prawn Cheese Ball with Passionfruit Dip ‘粒芝’虾丸 – Lot One Exclusive ($17.60, $16.60 member price)
Dian Xiao Er’s prawn balls are bite-sized crunchy delights with molten cheese filling. So let it cool a while before deciding to pop one whole into your mouth.

The chef-curated passionfruit dip that accompanies the balls is a pleasant condiment.

The dip balances the sweet and salty taste of the prawn and cheese with its fruity tartness.
