What? A Korean bistro serving… Barbecue Stingray aka “hung her”.

New to the block on Crawford Lane at (Lavender is Ace Cafe Bar & Bistro, a Korean-inspired fusion eatery serving flame-grilled seafood. (Tolido’s Espresso Nook, Eat 3 Bowls and Feima Stone Hotpot are neighbours.)

This cafe-bistro offers a two-in-one spread of fresh grilled seafood and Korean dishes, promising a great time for foodies who want to try out both at the same time.

Local hawker favourites can be found on the menu, served in a vibrant and upscaled setting.

That is because the owners used to be operating BJ Grill Seafood 海鲜铁板烧 at Old Airport Food Centre for 15 years.

Therefore, you would find your local favourites including Stir-fried Sotong ($13.90), Stir-fried Lala Clams ($11.90), Stir-fried Mussels ($11.90), Oyster Omelette ($12.90), and Cockles ($11.90, $13.90 with sambal).

Go for the BBQ Stingray ($16.90), with a choice of sambal, garlic butter or both in the yuan yang version.

While I wished for the hotplate to be more sizzling hot with smoke when served to the table, the stingray meat was firm and pulled apart easily with a fork, with the size of the fish considered rather generous for an air-conditioned setting.

The taste of the meat was best complemented by the sweet and spicy sambal, although the garlic butter works well for those who prefer to avoid spicy food.

Between the two, I personally thought that the sambal worked better as it was tastier and paired with stingray better.

On the Korean side of things, you can have the Samgyeopsal Pork Belly ($13.9). Slices of pork belly are grilled with gochujang for a smoky and charred flavour, with an addictive spice.

There are also Korean Favourites of Kimchi Pancake ($9.90), Spicy Tteobokki ($7.90), and Korean Fried Chicken ($12.90, $13.90).

For something filling, the Seafood Kimchi Stew ($14.90) could be just acidic enough to keep your appetite high.

Though I thought it was lacking in that something (could be the base sauce, or the way they cook their noodles till very soft), that could be found in a more authentic Korean eatery.

Note that Ace Cafe Bar & Bistro has Happy Hour promotions – come here to grab a pint to go with your grilled seafood.
