Heading to Telok Blangah Crescent Food Centre in the evenings is not what many people will do, especially when there are many of hawker stalls already closed there. This is more of a morning market.
But you would spot a line of people waiting patiently (or perhaps hear the sound of the frying on the wok. The cling cling clang clang) for a plate of Char Kway Teow.
Talk about the best Char Kway Teow in Singapore and many would give their votes to Outram Park Fried Kway Teow Mee (Hong Lim Food Centre), Hill Street Fried Kway Teow (Bedok South Food Centre), No. 18 Zion Road Fried Kway Teow (Zion Road Food Centre) or perhaps Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow (Old Airport Road Food Centre).
But there are those who feel that Hai Kee is ‘better’ than all the rest. Of course that is subjective.
Hai Kee used to be from Margaret Drive Food Centre and uncle Loh Kwee Leng has more than 50 years of experience, and many regulars who have been eating this since young commented it still tasted just as good.
Even if you spot ‘just’ 5-10 customers in the line, you may have to wait at least 30 – 45 minutes because uncle fries this up PLATE BY PLATE, unhurriedly in his own style and rhythm.
Quite a joy to watch really, but it can be a test on your patience.
Each plate is sold at $4, while the maximum number of packets one can takeaway is 10.
Even if you order 10, he still fries one-plate-at-a-time (so pray hard that you are not standing behind someone who is ordering for the village.)
This was one plate that gave me the “wow” on the first bite.
It is on a different level all together… the wok-hei, smokiness, the moist texture, and that CRUNCH of the pork lard is all delicious-ness.
The crispy pork lard is prepared fresh daily earlier in the afternoon.
I ordered the without cockles version, and I read that they are plump and servings are usually generous. However, do note that there is no lup cheong (Chinese sausages) added.
Would say probably one of the top threes in Singapore, if standard still remains.
