Lady M may be gone from South Beach, but the same corner now has another cake specialist.
This one also comes with a name that, for some reason, I still have trouble remembering even after typing it several times… Dignus Amoris.
Dignus Amoris started out as a takeaway-focused cake spot at Pearl’s Hill Terrace before moving into this space at South Beach Avenue.
There is a Japanese-inspired look, with dine-in seating this time, including a long communal table and smaller tables around the sides.
The brand is known for its low-sugar layered cakes, seasonal fruits and some less predictable flavour combinations.
When I visited, the display included Sencha Grape ($15.20), Black Sesame Persimmon Pumpkin Cake ($14.80) and Miso Basque ($9.80), among others.
At close to $15 a slice (and that’s before taxes), I did hesitate for quite a while. Like, “What?” Inflation has indeed hit hard in Singapore. With a drink, that can be more expensive than a casual restaurant meal.
The Sencha Grape ($15.20) looked deceptively simple, with green tea sponge, cream and grapes hidden between the layers.
I liked that the tea flavour did not become overly bitter, while the grapes brought little bursts of sweetness and juiciness between all that soft sponge and cream. I did wish it was a bigger or taller slice.
Perhaps more interesting was the Black Sesame Persimmon Pumpkin Cake ($14.80), which sounded like quite a lot happening in one slice.
The black sesame came through with a roasty, nutty flavour, while the fruitier and sweeter layers stopped the whole thing from becoming too heavy.
Prices for coffee start from $5.50 for an Espresso, while a Flat White is $7 to $7.50 depending on the beans, with two single-origin choices for the espresso-based drinks.
The Indonesia North Sumatra Mandheling goes towards dark chocolate, warm spice and woody notes, while the Ethiopia Shakkisso Guji is the brighter option with ripe fruit and tangerine. Though to be honest, I was not the biggest fan of their coffee drinks.
There are also more unusual drinks such as Apocano ($9.80) with Japanese Aomori apple juice and espresso, Popcorn Dirty ($11), Matcha Coconut ($10) and Matcha Strawberry ($14).
Dignus Amoris is certainly not trying to be the inexpensive cake-and-coffee stop in the area.
At these prices though, the cakes cannot afford to be merely pretty. With higher prices come greater expectations.
