Souper Tang 汤师父 is a familiar name to many Singaporeans who head to JB for meals.

The Malaysian restaurant chain is known for Chinese herbal soups, nourishing broths and comfort dishes that feel quite homely.

For those who prefer not to cross the Causeway, Souper Tang has also returned to Singapore with an outlet at Raffles City Singapore.

If you have never had it before, the menu is pretty extensive, especially in the soup section.

There are options such as Souper Tang Signature Soup, Collagen Fish Maw Chicken Soup, Imperial Seafood Soup, American Ginseng Black Chicken Soup with Aged Black Garlic, and Black Truffle Chicken Soup.

One of my favourites was the Collagen Fish Maw Chicken Soup (RM39.90).

It did not taste aggressively herbal, so this should be easy to drink even if you are not the sort who usually goes for anything too medicinal.

The broth had a smooth and rounded quality, with the fish maw adding some texture without making the soup feel overly heavy.

The Mountain Pepper Pork Tripe Soup (RM33.90) was the soup with more kick, with the pepperiness coming through slowly.

It warmed the throat without turning into a full bak kut teh situation.

The combination of pork tripe, mushrooms and peppery broth made this one of the more substantial soups, especially if shared with rice and a few other dishes.

Beyond soups, there are also signature dishes such as Herbal Paper Wrapped Spring Chicken, Simmered Sesame Chicken Rice Pot, Souper Tang Braised Pork Rice, Truffle Scrambled Egg with Prawn, Signature Stone Pot Rice, and Home Braised Pork Belly in Rich Dark Special Sauce.

I also enjoyed the Simmered Sesame Chicken Rice Pot (RM29.90).

The rice was warm and fragrant, with sesame oil, ginger and chicken giving it that homely taste you probably want when you are not in the mood for something too fancy.

It was almost like claypot chicken rice, and the pieces were soft, wonderfully marinated, and had no bones, which is always appreciated by lazy people like me.

For dessert, there was the beancurd pudding, which is one of those Souper Tang items that regulars may remember.

The Signature Caramel Beancurd and Signature Ginger Beancurd are served in wooden tubs, with the syrup on the side.

The beancurd itself was smooth and soft, with a light soybean fragrance. To me, it was like a more “beany” Lao Ban.

Souper Tang is more for the days when you want something warm, Chinese and nourishing, suitable for lunch, dinner or a family meal.

The extensive menu also means you do not necessarily have to come only for soup, though the herbal broths are still the main reason many diners return.
