Bukit Merah View Market & Hawker Centre has quite a few old-school stalls worth returning for, and 71 卤面 LOR MEE is definitely a breakfast-time neighbourhood favourite.

The stall is located at #01-71, hence the very direct name. I previously listed it as one of the 10 Best Lor Mee you can have in Singapore.

The order is straightforward: Lor Mee in different portions ($4 or $5), with the usual option to add chilli, vinegar and garlic according to preference., with the usual option to add chilli, vinegar and garlic according to preference.

I had mine with a mix of yellow noodles and bee hoon, covered in a dark, glossy gravy and topped with ngor hiang, fish cake, pork slices, crispy fried bits, bean sprouts, coriander and chilli.
The gravy was the part I liked most, as it had that nostalgic Lor Mee taste, thick enough to coat the noodles without becoming too gluey halfway through.
It was savoury and slightly sweet, rather than sharp or heavily spiced, so those who like a more 重口味 (zhong kou wei) intense bowl may want to be more generous with the vinegar and chilli.
I liked the mix of yellow noodles and bee hoon too, as the bee hoon helped absorb the gravy while the yellow noodles gave the bowl more bite.
And of course, the crispy bits also made a difference, softening slightly in the lor while adding a bit of crunch and fried fragrance.
I like digging in my Lor Mee for the various surprises. The ngoh hiang brought that distinct old-school charm, alongside familiar, no-frills toppings like fish cake and sliced pork.
71 卤面 LOR MEE is the kind of stall I would visit earlier in the day, especially since the line can get quite long at times.
This is worth trying if you like your Lor Mee more old-school and not overly starchy.
Later may just mean sold out.
