Rose Pretzel Bagel, Rose & Raspberry Sourdough Tart, and Rose Americano?
I did not expect one of the more eye-catching new bakery café to be ‘hidden’ inside People’s Park Complex.
Daily Artisan & Bakery has taken over the former Dough Magic unit on the first floor, with a long counter filled with breads, pastries and several very pink creations covered generously in rose petals.
Oh, there is also a small seating area beside the coffee counter, though the sit-down cafe setup still feels rather casual and, well, makeshift?
The bakery highlights natural levain and 24-hour slow fermentation, though the products getting most of the attention are its Yunnan-inspired rose bakes.
Edible rose pastries are strongly associated with Yunnan, particularly Kunming, where flower cakes are commonly filled with rose petals and sugar.
The Cheese Rose Pretzel Bagel ($6.50) comes liberally crusted with real dried rose petals, sandwiching a thick layer of rose-infused cream cheese.
The floral aroma hits immediately, though the heavy coating of petals might prove a bit overwhelming if you prefer subtle flavours.
But to be fair, the bagel was pretty delightful, with a soft texture and a slight chew.
The Rose & Raspberry Sourdough Tart ($4.30) came shaped like a flower, with crisp, folded pastry around a bright raspberry filling.
It was filled with a tangy jam, with the tartness of the raspberry cutting through the sweet, perfumed rose notes. Actually, not bad.
Beyond the rose-covered items, the selection is actually quite extensive.
Its listed best sellers include Walnut Brioche (Top 1 Best Seller), Coffee Bun, Thai Pineapple Buns, Salted Egg Custard Bread, Purple Rice Cheese Bread, Croissant Sausage Roll and Cream Cheese Fig Baguette.
For something savoury, I also picked up the Croissant Sausage Roll, one of the bakery’s listed best sellers.
The sausage was wrapped in laminated pastry and finished with black and white sesame seeds. It was surprisingly better and crispier than I expected.
For a thirst quencher, coffee choices include Cappuccino ($5.90), Rose Latte ($6.30), Coconut Latte ($6.30), Rose Americano ($5), Orange Americano ($4.90), Pomelo Americano ($4.90), Coconut Americano ($4.90) and Sparkling Americano ($4.80).
After ordering two rose pastries, I somehow decided that the Rose Americano would complete the theme.
The floral flavour did not quite work with the coffee for me, and the loose petals floating inside became more troublesome than decorative.
I eventually found myself sucking rose petals up through the straw together with the Americano. Haha.
The rose-covered bakes may look gimmicky at first, but the ones I tried were actually not too bad. I would return to explore some of the less flamboyant breads next time.
