Most people may walk right past Bugis Cube, only noticing the colourful Chinese restaurants facing the main street.

Located along North Bridge Road, just opposite Bugis Junction and near Bugis MRT, the building is more known for tuition centres, beauty salons, massage shops and small eateries.

But that is also why Sushi Dorobo on Level 3 feels a little like a hidden find.

The Japanese restaurant itself is small, with counter seats where you can watch the chefs prepare the sushi and bowls in front of you.

It is run by a chef duo, and the set-up feels more personal than the usual mall sushi chain, though still casual enough for lunch.

Sushi Dorobo offers omakase as well, which was what my friend was more interested in. The Shinobi Sushi Omakase ($99) includes an appetiser, seasonal sashimi, 7 pieces of seasonal nigiri, handroll, hot dish, soup and dessert.

But I was here for the more wallet-friendly lunch donburi.

The Donburi Lunch menu is available from 11:30am to 2pm, with bowls such as Salmon Don ($16.90), Aburi Engawa Don ($19.90), Aburi Salmon Mentaiko Don ($19.90), Bara Chirashi Don ($21.90), Salmon Ikura Don ($22.90), Tuna Bowl ($26.90), Dorobo Kaisen Don ($35.90), and Hokkaido Don ($42.90).

I went for the Dorobo Kaisen Don ($35.90), the most eye-catching of the lot, with prawns, salmon, tuna, ikura, shredded crab, tamago and other sashimi slices arranged over rice.

The better bites came from the sweeter and fattier pieces, especially when eaten with some wasabi and rice.

For the Bara Chirashi Don ($21.90), you get cubed sashimi with salmon, tuna, ikura and tamago over rice, instead of larger slices.

It was fresh, easy to mix through and eat, with different textures in each spoonful, and would work if you want something more affordable without breaking the bank.

I thought what made the lunch deal really attractive was the add-on set.

For an additional $8, you get free-flow salad, miso soup, green tea, onsen tamago and dessert (I must have had a couple of eggs.)

That is quite value-for-money, especially since many Japanese lunch sets elsewhere would charge quite a bit just for one refillable drink or side.
