butter tgt has moved, though not too far from where people first started noticing it.

The café was previously found on the second floor along Duxton Road, where it became one of those slightly ‘hidden’ places that still managed to appear all over social media.

Fun fact: butter tgt started from two separate home-based projects: Yu Feng’s small-batch bakery Youkneadcakes and Keith’s mobile coffee cart Woke Cup.

The new home at 55 Neil Road feels like butter tgt has stepped out of hiding.

It is brighter, more spacious, and much easier to walk into without wondering if you are at the right place.

The look is still soft and photogenic, with cream tones, light wood furniture and warm lighting, but it now feels more like a substantial brunch and mains café.

Previously, butter tgt was better known for its bakes, coffee and smaller café plates.

At Neil Road, the offerings now cover brunch from 9am to 3pm, with Sourdough with Butter ($12), Eggs Benedict ($21), Shokupan French Toast ($21), Nut Butter Banana Toast ($12), Grilled Chicken Sando ($16), Breakfast Plate ($26), Grilled Cheese with Tomato Dip ($16), and Maple Granola ($16).

Come lunch time onwards, and the menu gets heavier with Hot Honey Parmigiano Fries ($11), Chicken Karaage ($14), Prawn Toast ($16), Garlic Maitake Spaghetti ($20), Seaweed Tagliatelle ($26), Prawn Tagliatelle ($27), and mains such as Miso Pork Collar ($31).

I had the Garlic Maitake Spaghetti ($20), which came with maitake, togarashi and parmigiano.

The flavours were there, with the mushroom giving it an earthy bite and the cheese adding savouriness, though I found the pasta a little oily towards the end.

Not enough to make me push the plate away, but perhaps something to note if you prefer your pasta cleaner tasting.

The Grilled Chicken Sando ($16) worked better for me. It came with toasted shokupan, grilled chicken thigh, peanut butter, tomato and lettuce.

The peanut butter sounded like the part that could go either way, but it gave the sandwich a slightly nutty sweetness. Call it a little surprise in the middle.

For sweets, the display had bakes such as Brown Butter Matcha Cookie ($6.50), Banana Bread ($6), Lemon Drizzle Slice ($6.50), and Black Sesame Soybean Crumble ($8.50).

I tried the Black Sesame Soybean Crumble, which sounded like something I would usually like, though the texture leaned a tad dry for me.

The black sesame flavour came through, but I would probably try the safer Banana Bread next time.

The new Neil Road space is more polished, the menu is wider, and it now feels less like a small hidden café and more like an all-day space for brunch, pasta, bakes and coffee.

Some items worked better for me than others, but as a move, this feels like a step up.
