Not to be confused with the Seng Kee at Changi Road, known for its Black Herbal Chicken and zi char items, this is the Kaki Bukit 511 Market & Food Centre outlet.
Seng Kee occupies two units at the corner, with a large yellow signboard listing Black Chicken Herbal Soup, Kidney Mee Sua Soup, Steamed Fish, Claypot Pig’s Organ and Vegetables.
By the way, the Kaki Bukit stall is newly included in the MICHELIN Guide Singapore 2026 selection with a Bib Gourmand, and the guide highlights its Black Chicken Herbal Soup. Interesting.
It is quite a wide menu, but the Kidney Mee Sua is the dish I usually come for (shall leave more space for other dishes next time).
The truth is, I am no kidney lover because of the rubbery-meets-crunchy texture and possible whiffy smell.
But I just had to try it because tables and tables of customers at this hawker centre were ordering this signature dish.
The Kidney Mee Sua ($5, $7, $9) came in a red bowl with dark herbal soup, thin mee sua, chopped spring onions, sliced chilli padi on the side, and neatly-cut pieces of kidney and lean pork.
It looked quite intense at first, but the broth was not as heavy as the colour suggested.
The soup was herbal and slightly peppery, with enough flavour without being too overpowering. It also did not cover the taste of the pork, which is important for a bowl like this.
The mee sua was the part I enjoyed most. It was silky smooth and not overcooked till mushy, which sounds simple, but makes a big difference.
Mee sua can turn soft very quickly, especially when sitting in hot soup, so this was quite satisfying to eat.
As for the kidney, it was cleanly prepared and had that firm bite kidney lovers would probably appreciate.
I still would not say I am fully converted, because kidney has a texture you either like or you do not. But I must say there was no strong ‘porky’ smell in my bowl.
If kidney is not your thing, the Pig’s Organ Soup ($5, $7, $9), Pig’s Stomach Soup ($6), or Lean Meat Mee Sua ($5, $7, $9) would be easier options.
Many customers also come for the tonic soups such as Ginseng Black Chicken ($12), Claypot Pig’s Liver ($13), Claypot Pork ($13), and Pig’s Trotter Vinegar ($15), dishes that are getting harder to find now.
Seng Kee is for those days when you want something warm, herbal and filling, with a flavour that feels so comforting and homely. This will be your heaven on a cool rainy weather.
