This small stall has become a familiar name for those looking for Nasi Lemak in George Town, Penang.
It does not serve the elaborate version with fried chicken wing, cucumber slices, peanuts and a full plate arrangement.
Instead, the Nasi Lemak here comes wrapped in banana leaf, compact and ready to be eaten on the spot or taken away. Yup, the old-school way.
Locating the stall is easy enough if you head towards the Sri Weld Food Court on Lebuh Pantai.
The stall is found right at the entrance, marked by bright red banners and a massive stack of green pyramids.
Small note: you do need to order a drink if you intend to sit and dine in this food court.
The small setup gained more following after earning a spot in the MICHELIN Guide with a MICHELIN Selected.
The menu is focused entirely on different protein pairings for the coconut rice.
Each packet is priced at a flat RM 3 (very affordable!), which is an absolute bargain in this day and age.
You can choose from the classic Bilis Telur (anchovies and egg), Ikan (fish), Ikan Masin (salted fish), Sotong (squid), Udang (prawn), or the ever popular Ayam (chicken).
I opted for the classic Bilis Telur, which is essentially the gold standard.
Opening the banana leaf released some pandan-scented steam.
But the sambal was the real hero here, as it packed a serious punch that might catch the uninitiated off guard. It was thick, dark, and rich with the flavour of toasted shrimp paste.
The rice was fragrant enough, with a light coconut aroma, though I would not say it was the richest nasi lemak rice around.
It was soft, warm and comforting, but the sambal did most of the work at the end of the day.
And yes, I want to eat this again on my next trip.
