If you don’t understand Hokkien, you may wonder about this strange shop named Mai Ge Wen 麥閣問.
The name 麥閣問 (Mai Ge Wen) is a humorous Hokkien phrase that literally translates to “don’t ask anymore” or “stop asking”. I guess it is a candid way to tell customers to just sit down and enjoy the food without overthinking the menu.
Located along the second floor of Suntec City, this café presents itself as a modern Nanyang-style coffeehouse with a slight Taiwanese twist.
At first I thought it would be like a Taiwanese breakfast shop, though they do sell local kopitiam items as well
Plus point: it opens early at 7:30 am.
However, the space itself is a little cramped, especially during the peak morning and lunch hours, but it functions well as a quick pitstop for office workers.
For breakfast, they offer Kaya Butter Toast Sets ($6.20), Peanut Toast Sets ($6.20), and various Muffin Sets ranging from $7.90 to $8.90.
I decided to go for the Chicken Patty with Cheese Muffin Set ($8.90), which comes with a side and a drink.
The muffin was actually and surprisingly not bad, especially with the thick layer of creamy eggs.
To be honest, it reminded me quite a bit of the sausage mcmuffin version from a certain famous fast-food chain, though with a slightly more local touch.
If you need a heavier meal, their “Mains” section includes Nasi Lemak with Shiok Curry Chicken ($12.90), Mala Fire Ramen ($11.90), Laksa in Love ($11.90), and Oyster Noodles ($11.90).
They also serve traditional snacks like Pan-fried Radish Cake ($6.90) and Hash Brown Egg Tarts ($6.90) for those who prefer to grab and munch.
I had the Tom Yam Bee Hoon with Lemongrass Chicken ($11.90). You could say the dish was ‘no-fuss’ and delivered exactly what was promised on the menu.
The bee hoon had a clear tang from the tom yam. The lemongrass chicken, with hints of turmeric and lemongrass from the marinade, provided a decent crunch and some protein without being overly greasy.
Liked that there was some achar too which cut through the heavier elements.
The prices at Mai Ge Wen are nett and inclusive of the prevailing GST, which makes it a straightforward, quick, no-nonsense meal dining choice in Suntec City.
